CULTURE, ARTS & PRIDE COMMISSION Wednesday, February 7, 2024 1:00 PM Municipal Complex, Committee Meeting Room (3300) 100 Ann Edwards Lane Mount Pleasant, SC 29464 Minutes Present: Corey Alston; Chase Barrett; Brad Dunnells; Chuck Lauer; Bren Romano-Monteiro; Nicole Seitz Absent: Kathryn Whitaker, Chair Staff Present: Nicole Harvey; Tracy Richter; Dani Fraser; Steve Gergick The meeting was called to order by Mr. Dunnells at 1:04 PM. 1. Approval of Minutes from the November 29, 2023 meeting Ms. Monteiro motioned to approve the minutes and Mr. Alston seconded the motion. All were in favor. 2. Public Comments There were no public comments. 3. Report from Subcommittees a. Community Arts Mr. Gergick provided an update on the RFP Process based on the HREC meeting earlier this week. Mr. Gergick explained that an RFP Selection Committee will review the submitted proposals and make a selection. Discussion followed. b. Sweetgrass Basket Stand Revitalization Ms. Harvey and Mr. Alston discussed the status of the project. Telephone (843) 884-8517 - Fax (843) 856-2180 www.tompsc.com Mr. Dunnells asked for additional information on the basket stand that was destroyed and then rebuilt by volunteers, and Mr. Alston responded. Ms. Monteiro suggested letting basket artisans know to contact the Town and CAP if something like this happens again. Discussion followed. Mr. Dunnells asked about dates for next revitalization project. Mr. Alston suggested some dates and tentatively decided on April 13th. Discussion of work to be done followed. Mr. Alston asked about funding for a Sweetgrass Christmas party in 2024. Ms. Harvey responded that the new FY budget starts in July. Mr. Alston spoke more about the project and funding process. Discussion followed. c. Traffic Box Art Ms. Harvey provided an update and showed new art installations, including a new installation featuring Ms. Seitz’s artwork. Ms. Harvey provided an update on upcoming scheduled installations. d. Marketing Ms. Harvey encouraged the Commission to interact with the social media pages. Ms. Harvey provided an update on upcoming events: Sweetgrass Half Marathon (February 24), ArtFest (March 23), Mayor’s Art Reception (TBD), Blessing of the Fleet (April 28), Sweetgrass Festival (July 27). Ms. Harvey noted that there would be an inventory of promotional materials and supplies for CAP exhibits and asked for input from the Commission. Discussion followed. 4. New Business Ms. Monteiro announced that she is moving to Spartanburg and will be leaving the Commission. Mr. Lauer asked for clarification of the Green Commission’s role in the Tree Bank grants. Ms. Monteiro mentioned that Mayor Haynie asked for artists at the Mayor’s Art Reception to have a lanyard or tag identifying them as an artist.
