TOWN OF MOUNT PLEASANT, SOUTH CAROLINA RECREATION COMMITTEE Tuesday, July 6, 2021 11:45 a.m. Municipal Complex, Council Chambers - 1st Floor 100 Ann Edwards Lane, Mount Pleasant, SC 29464 Minutes Members Present: Gary Santos, Chair; Jake Rambo, G. M. Whitley Staff Present: Eric DeMoura, Steve Gergick 1. Call to order Mr. Santos called the meeting to order at 11:45 a.m. 2. Approval of Minutes from the April 5, 2021 meeting Ms. Whitley made a motion to approve the minutes of the April 5, 2021, meeting. Mr. Rambo seconded the motion. All were in favor. 3. Public Comments None 4. Employee years of service recognition Mr. Gergick recognized Ms. Jessica Smith for five years of service with the Town in the Recreation Department. Mr. Gergick recognized Ms. Melissa Estrada for 15 years of service with the Town in the Recreation Department. 5. Program/projects update Mr. Gergick introduced Mr. Greer Hanlon who organized a lacrosse tournament that was held June 12 and 13 at Carolina Park. Mr. Hanlon said he was with the Holy City Lacrosse Invitational and Charleston Elite Lacrosse. He thanked Mr. Santos, Mr. Gergick, the Recreation staff, Mr. Andy Weis, and Public Services staff for the support of the tournament. He said boy’s tournament welcomed 32 teams with 640 players from numerous towns and had approximately 1,800 spectators. He said all the hotel rooms for the tournament were in Mount Pleasant. He said they hope to be welcomed back for other events and add a girl’s tournament. Recreation Commission July 6, 2021 Page 2 of 2 Mr. Gergick gave a program update. He said Flag Football was very popular and did very well with over 400 people signing up. He said the Senior Center participation numbers were down, but they expect by late fall that will increase. He said that Summer Camps were going well and continue until August 13. Mr. Gergick reviewed some of the upcoming events. Mr. Santos said the Culture, Arts & Pride Commission (CAP) approved the commission of two murals at the Jones Center. He said they are also launching a project to revitalize the sweetgrass basket stands along Highway 17. Mr. Gergick said some of the projects taking place were to finish the design process on Carolina Park Phase III with construction to begin in October or November and to begin building the baseball field at Cario Middle School to allow Lucy Beckham High School use of the Town’s field at Wando South. He said they also would begin the Memorial Waterfront Park Phase III project and he shared the different elements. He said the First Responders Monument was beginning construction that day. Mr. Rambo asked if they were still waiting on South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) to approve the use of the Memorial Waterfront Park land. Mr. Gergick said they are working with SCDOT to show them each design element for the project. He also said that the renovation of the Town Hall Track was under way. Mr. Gergick said the CAP Commission had Mr. Frank Sonntag, a member, pass away recently. 6.
