TOWN OF MOUNT PLEASANT, SOUTH CAROLINA HISTORICAL COMMISSION MEETING FEBRUARY 14, 2019 MINUTES Green arrows in minutes are hyperlinks to the recording Present: Richard Gutowski, chair, Alisha Davenport, Brittany Lavelle-Tulla, Patrick Morrissey Absent: Lonnie Doles Staff: Kate Dolan, Lynnette Lynes, Jane Yager-Baumrind Mr. Gutowski called the meeting to order at 8:00 am. I. Approval of Agenda Mr. Morrissey moved for approval of the agenda. Ms. Lavelle-Tulla second the motion. All in favor. II. Approval of Minutes Ms. Lavelle-Tulla moved for approval of the minutes. Ms. Davenport second the motion. All in favor with Mr. Morrissey abstaining. III. Public Comment Mr. Walter Brown expressed concern with the perceived lack of support from the Commission members regarding attendance at the Black History Month events over the past five years. He encouraged the Commission to attend the remaining events. Mr. John Wright, 145 Rose Lane, stated that he is working on the 75th anniversary of the Sweet Shop that would be held on April 2, 2020. He stated that he would like the Commission’s support for the events. IV. Finalize Historical Marker Text Mr. Morrissey moved to approve marker text as follows: Prince’s Ferry In August of 1765, the state legislature granted Captain Clement Lempriere a petition to re-activate the old ferry, known as the Hobcaw Ferry, formerly  Historical Commission Meeting February 14, 2019 Page 2 of 3 occupied by William Watson. Captain Lempriere sporadically operated the ferry until his death in 1778. Following his death, the ferry remained dormant until Captain Lempriere’s grandson, Clement Lempriere Prince assumed control in the early 1790s. The ferry became known as Prince’s Ferry and was located at Lempriere’s Point, just south of Molasses Creek and Hobcaw Point at the mouth of the Wando River. Prince’s Ferry remained a ferry service to Charleston until December 1821 when William Matthews obtained permission to operate what later became known as Mathis Ferry. One Hand Sanders Sometime between the 1790s and 1820s, a brownstone marker with an engraved hand was erected near this sight directing the way to Prince’s Ferry. The marker was originally located near the intersection of Mathis Ferry Road and Highway 17. A 1790s dispute between Hibben’s Ferry and Prince’s Ferry settled by the state legislature is possibly the reason the marker was moved to Remley’s Point, where it was used as a property corner marker for land owned by Roger Sanders. Referred to as the “One Hand Sanders” marker, it is engraved with the phrase, “Three & an half Miles to Prince’s Ferry.” A replica of the original marker is located below. The original marker is currently on display at The Charleston Museum. Ms. Davenport second. All in favor. V. Discuss Additional Stipend for Black History Month Ms. Davenport moved to approve the stipend for the Cathedral Boys’ Choir of $100. Mr. Morrissey seconded the motion. All in favor. VI. Discuss Quick Fact Friday The Commission agreed that previous quick fact Fridays could be repeated and that information for important dates should be repeated for that week and month. VII. Committee Reports A. Discussion of Committee Assignments Ms. Dolan stated that the committees were titled with the various tasks assigned to the different committees. Organization and Administration Committee The Commission agreed to defer designating members to the committees to the next meeting so a revised action plan can be provided to the Commission. VIII.
