TOWN OF MOUNT PLEASANT, SOUTH CAROLINA HISTORICAL COMMISSION SEPTEMBER 9, 2021 MINUTES Present: Deborah Sutherland, Chair, Clyde Hopper, Pam Gabriel, Bryan Blalock, Courtney Theis, William Hine, Danielle Cox. Staff: Kate Miller, Lynnette Lynes Ms. Sutherland called the meeting to order at 8:06 am. I. Approval of Agenda Mr. Hopper moved for approval of the agenda. Mr. Hine seconded the motion. All in favor. II. Approval of Minutes – August 12, 2021 Meeting Ms. Sutherland moved for approval of the minutes with the following correction: ➢ Page 2, motion on approval of budget—change Mr. Bryn Blalock to Mr. Blalock. Ms. Theis seconded the motion. All in favor. III. Public Comment There being no comments, Ms. Sutherland continued with the agenda. IV. Staff Update Ms. Miller updated the Commission on various projects. V. Committee Action Items A. Organization and Administration Committee 1. Action and Update Budget Ms. Theis updated the Commission on the budget. She stated that the additional cost for the shadow box will be on agenda for next month. B. Historical Markers and Interpretation Committee 1. Discussion and Action on Future 6 Mile Historical Marker Ms. Gabriel updated the Commission on the Six Mile marker. Ms. Theis stated that Ms. Brittany Lovell-Tula is a local historian and could be contacted to provide information. The Commission agreed to review and approve the text at the next meeting and to send any proposed changes to the text within two weeks. Ms. Theis moved for approval of up to $100 consultation fee for text review. Ms. Cox seconded the motion. All in favor. Historical Commission September 9, 2021 Page 2 of 2 2. Discussion the portion of the Grace Bridge and signage Ms. Gabriel updated the Commission on this project. C. Special Collection and Research Committee 1. Discuss Oral Histories Mr. Hopper reviewed his work on the oral histories. Ms. Gabriel stated that she has a video of Johnnie Dodds’ oral history that she is donating to the Town. Ms. Sutherland stated that there is a grant available that could be considered. D. Tourism and Community Outreach Committee 1. Discuss French/Spanish Invasion Project Mr. Blalock updated the Commission on the project. He stated that Mr. Doug Bostic is willing to work on the project pro bono. 2. Discuss Military Tour Mr. Blalock updated the Commission on this project. E. Marketing Committee No update F. Black History Month Committee Mr. Hine reviewed possible speakers for Black History Month with the Commission. The Commission discussed whether the events should be in-person or virtual. VI. Discussion of Next Month’s Agenda Items The Commission agreed that the following items should be included on next month’s agenda: ➢ Vote on funds for dry cleaning ➢ Museum proposal and shadow box for letter jacket. ➢ French/Spanish invasion ➢ Review and approve Six Mile ➢ Military Tour marker text ➢ Christmas Parade ➢ Update on Grace Bridge ➢ Black History month ➢ Oral Histories There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:57 am.
