Minutes
Ms. Sims called the meeting to order at 5:04 p.m. Ms. Graci Canon,
Mr. Adam El Hassan, Ms. Grace Griffin, Ms. Willa Jones, Mr. McClain
Stoklosa, Ms. Caroline Tiller, Ms. Isabelle Turner, Mr. Chad Weis and Ms.
McKenna Young were all present. Ms. Geneva Kowbeidu arrived at 5:48
p.m. Ms. Cally DeMoura and Mr. Garrett Griffin were absent.
Ms. Sims stated that since Town Council Member Gary Santos was
present, she would like to start with Public Comments.
1. Public Comments
Gary Santos, Mount Pleasant Town Council Member thanked
the Youth Council Members for serving and gave a brief overview of
the first Youth Council and their priority project which was creating a
skate park.
2. Welcome and Introductions
Ms. Sims and the Youth Council Members introduced
themselves.
3. Approval of the minutes from the May 20, 2021 meeting
Ms. Turner moved to approve the minutes, seconded by Mr.
Stoklosa. All present voted in favor.
4. Review of Robert’s Rules of Order
Ms. Sims gave an overview of Robert’s Rules of Order, provided the
Youth Council Members with a handout highlighting the rules they
would need to know and asked that they become familiar with them
before the next meeting.
5. Overview of the Town of Mount Pleasant
Ms. Sims gave the following presentation.

6. Discussion of priority projects for the session
Ms. Sims reviewed the list of priority projects for the previous Youth
Council and asked the current Youth Council Members what they
would like to accomplish during this session.
Mr. Stoklosa stated he would like to continue working with the
National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and would also like to
work on creating outdoor public basketball courts.
Mr. Weis stated he agreed with the basketball court objective as there
are no courts on the north side of town.
Mr. El Hassan stated he would like to see some basketball courts as
well and would also like to consider having a compost area where
people could take old school papers to be composted.
Ms. Jones said she would like to work on a supply drive or money
collection to make care packages for the homeless.
Ms. Garrett stated she had already started a toiletry drive for the
homeless, so that could be incorporated.
Ms. Turner said with regard to the composting idea, she heard that
Charleston County does not recycle. She asked if that is true and if
so, what can be done to change that. Ms. Sims stated she would
look into it.
(Ms. Kowbeidu arrived at 5:48 p.m.)
Ms. Griffin said the composting could be combined with a tree
campaign. Ms. Sims stated that would complement two Town
programs, Take Root and the Tree Bank.
Ms. Sims asked Ms. Kowbeidu to introduce herself before continuing
the priority projects discussion.
Ms. Turner said she enjoyed partnering with the Sweetgrass
Marathon and having an event on which to end the Youth Council
session. She stated perhaps this year they could incorporate mental
health.
Ms. Kowbeidu stated she would like to work with head start programs
to assist with reading skills and tutoring.

7. Call for nominations for Chair and Vice-Chair positions
Ms. Sims stated the Chair and Vice-Chair positions would be voted
on at the next meeting and asked if anyone was interested in being
considered.
Ms. Turner and Mr. Stoklosa stated they would like to be considered
for the Chair position.
Mr. Weis and Mr. El Hassan stated they would like to be considered
for the Vice Chair position.
Town Council Member Brenda Corley stated she would like to
thank the members of the Youth Council for serving and would like
them to consider being involved in a new project called Be Kind
Mount Pleasant.
Ms. Turner asked the Youth Council Members to each send her a
short biography and a photo that she can put on social media.
8. Adjourn
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 5:59
p.m.
