Housekeeping items
D
Ms. Griffin asked if everyone had responded with their tee shirt sizes,
R
and everyone present responded in the affirmative. Ms. Howard said
she would place the order.
[Ms. Yarbrough entered at 5:06 p.m.]
Ms. Griffin said not everyone was able to make it to the last Town
Council meeting and said those that have not attended will need to do
so before the end of the Youth Council term. Ms. Howard said
anyone that attends the meeting may check in with the Clerk to verify
their attendance.
Ms. Howard asked if the questionnaire was sent to any of the high
schools as there were only two responses received. Ms. Griffin said
she did not think Academic Magnet received it, and she did not know
about the other schools. Ms. Griffin said that should be a priority for
this month and said she would send the questionnaire out and send
reminders as well.
Ms. Howard said we need some responses and for everyone to look
at website designs to get some idea of what the website will look like.
Ms. Griffin asked if Mr. LaFontaine could be at the next meeting and
then if necessary, a private meeting could be set up with a few of the
Youth Council Members. Ms. Griffin asked for that to be placed on
the April agenda.
Mr. Nussbaum said that once the responses to the questionnaire are
received, resources will need to be gathered, so perhaps we can start
gathering them. He said there is a lot to do with just a couple of
meetings remaining, and we could possibly add another meeting.
Ms. Griffin said we could possibly schedule a meeting that would not
count against absences to accommodate those playing sports.
Mr. McLawhorn said the presentation framework can be put together
T
and be ready to present, and then the resources can be added later.
Ms. Griffin said we need to discuss what sort of resources will be
AF
used for the website and said school counselors and therapists would
be a good resource. Mr. McLawhorn said he thought that would be
the best option.
Mr. McLawhorn said a disclaimer would need to be added to the
website about this not taking the place of medical advice.
D
Ms. Howard asked for a review of what will be done this month.
R
Ms. Griffin said the questionnaire will be sent out and the
presentation for Communications will be prepared.
Mr. McLawhorn said Youth Council needs to create a slideshow to
present to Communications, and Ms. Griffin confirmed that it was the
idea of how the website is to be set up and Mr. McLawhorn
responded in the affirmative. He suggested that the framework be
started this evening while everyone is present.
Ms. Griffin said there will need to be an explanation slide, a slide
representing why this website is being created, a slide addressing
what the website might look like, the questionnaire, and a resource
slide explaining what school psychiatrists would be utilized for advice
and resources.
Mr. Nussbaum said this month we can talk to any resources we have
available.
Ms. Utsey asked if the counselors are providing written information to
be put on the website and Ms. Griffin said that would probably be
best, though she did not think their e-mail addresses should be
provided on the website.
Mr. McLawhorn said when going to the school psychologists, tell
them what issues need to be addressed and ask them where can
reliable resources be found.
Ms. Griffin said on the website we would be providing a link for
people to follow to find resources to address their issues.
5. Discussion and possible action to change the April 4, 2024
meeting to April 11, 2024
Ms. Howard said Charleston County School District spring break falls
the week of the next meeting. She asked if Youth Council would like
T
to change the meeting date to Thursday, April 11. After some
discussion, Youth Council Members agreed to meet on Thursday,
April 11, 2024 at 5:00 p.m.

This item was discussed under an earlier agenda item.
Update on details of spring quarterly service project
D
Ms. Griffin said she talked with her spring service committee and they
would like to set up a marsh sweep as their service project.
R
Ms. McLawhorn said a marsh sweep can be set up through the
Town’s Stormwater department and he will reach out to Ms.
O’Laughlin in the department. Ms. Griffin asked if Ms. O’Laughlin
could contact her directly so they could agree on a weekend that
worked best.
After discussion, the members tentatively agreed on March 17th, and
more information would follow.
Ms. Griffin asked everyone to send the questionnaire to their schools
for distribution.
Ms. Griffin asked everyone to send a screenshot of a website they
like to the group chat. Mr. McLawhorn suggested looking through the
Town department webpages.
Mr. McLawhorn asked if they could send the presentation to him and
Ms. Howard so they could look it over and possibly give guidance.
Ms. Griffin said we are going to possibly schedule a second meeting
in April or May and Ms. Howard said she would send Ms. Griffin some
dates that the meeting room is available. Ms. Griffin said the
additional meeting would not count against attendance.
8. Adjourn
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 5:34
p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
