MOUNT PLEASANT YOUTH COUNCIL MEETING Thursday, April 11, 2024 5:00 PM Mount Pleasant Municipal Complex Council Chambers 100 Ann Edwards Lane, Mount Pleasant, SC 29464 MINUTES 1. Call to Order Ms. Griffin called the meeting to order at 5:01 p.m. Layla Giddens, Porter Yount, Rose Dillon, Evan Nussbaum and Lane Yarbrough were all present. Eli Barker, Jackson Naylor, Addison Utsey, and Mia Weis were all absent. 2. Public Comments There were no public comments. 3. Approval of the minutes from the March 7, 2024 meeting Ms. Griffin moved to approve the minutes, seconded by Mr. Nussbaum. All present voted in favor. 4. Housekeeping items Mr. McLawhorn asked if everyone had been to a Town Council Meeting. Ms. Griffin stated a couple members had been to the April meeting, and everyone else would be attending the May meeting. Ms. Giddens stated that she and Mr. Naylor had attended the April meeting. Ms. Griffin asked Ms. Dillon to have the last quarter project decided on so that it can be executed in May. 5. Discussion and possible action to add a special Youth Council Meeting After discussion, no action was taken to schedule a special meeting. 6. Presentation of priority project website framework to Staff Ms. Griffin presented the power point slides for the priority project website. Mr. Nussbaum stated he spoke with the counselor at Porter Gaud, and they did not want to send out a school-wide survey because they had already sent out a survey in the fall, however they did agree to share the information with Youth Council. Ms. Griffin said Academic Magnet had information as well. Mr. Nussbaum said the school also has a list of licensed counselors and therapists that Porter Gaud will send to parents if they request it, and the guidance counselor said those references could be used if permission is obtained by the individual counselors and therapists. Mr. McLawhorn said regarding the presentation, it would be better to not read directly from the slides, but rather have bullet points that can be made. He also suggested some minor formatting changes to the presentation to make it more attractive. Ms. Giddens asked if the format of the website would be decided by the Town and will there be a name, stating it should be easy to find and remember. Mr. McLawhorn said that can be discussed with the Communications Manager, but there will be some parameters. He said the presentation should focus a little more on where the information on it is being obtained and add a little more about the school guidance counselors and their roles. He said it is overall a good presentation. Mr. McLawhorn said it would be good to have a background slide showing why creating this website is important. Ms. Howard said we need to move forward with getting this developed as the end of the term is quickly approaching. She also reminded Youth Council members to check their e-mails as that is the main source of communication. Ms. Howard asked what information has been obtained for the website. Ms. Griffin said that both Porter Gaud and Academic Magnet have a questionnaire that had been sent out previously and they will be sharing the information rather than sending another survey to the students. Mr. Nussbaum said Porter Gaud’s questionnaire was very similar to what the Youth Council wanted to send, so they will share the information. Ms. Griffin said next year she would like to discuss adding something to the bylaws about attendance requirements for quarterly service projects and asked for that item to be placed on the agenda for the next meeting. 7. Adjourn There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 5:28 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Christine Barrett Clerk of Council April 11, 2024
