1005 East Main Street, James and Pamela Hale – Requesting to replace the front door at
the front of their residence
This property is located on the north side of East Main Street between Cherry Lane and Park
Circle. The house was constructed circa 1970 in the Modern Colonial Revival style of
architecture with a central chimney, gable roof, brick veneer, and 2 stories. The house is a non-
contributing structure of the East Main Street Historic District of the National Register of
Historic Places.
The applicants would like to continue renovating their home by replacing the front door of their
house. The current front door is metal. The replacement door will be a six (6) panel wood door
with clear glass in the six (6) panels and no new transom. Included in the agenda materials are
photographs of the proposed front door, one standing alone and the other door superimposed
onto the existing front entry of the house. Photographs of adjacent properties on both sides of
1005 E. Main Street are also included in your agenda materials for comparison. The houses on
both sides of this property are contributing structures in the East Main Street Historic District of
the National Register of Historic Places.
The applicant will be in attendance at the meeting to answer any questions the Commission may
have regarding the proposal.

State of Tennessee Certified Local Government Coordinator, Dan Brown – Presentation
on alternative materials used in the preservation of historic properties
At the July meeting Chairman Backlund requested staff to look into getting some information
regarding continuing education for Commission members. I contacted Mr. Brown at the State
Historic Preservation Office and he agreed to come to a meeting and present information he is
familiar with regarding the use of alternative materials in the preservation of historic properties.
Also included in your agenda materials is Preservation Brief 16: The Use of Substitute Materials
on Historic Building Exteriors. I included this brief from the National Park Service to provide
the Commission with a little information prior to Mr. Brown’s presentation.
