2. Park/Rec. Nick - Status of October snowstorm clean up: Entering final phase, clean up of parks. Will take a few weeks but may not
get it all. Chipping along Spine Road first, crews to chip trees to 15 feet off the sides of trails.
- Rectified two of the tree blow downs in the canal, able to get excavator onto side of the canal and grab the trees
after cutting off the base. Filled in holes and left stumps as afraid of possible washouts in heavy rain. Stumps can be
removed later.
- Will get the third tree blow down.
- Sign program purchases are out.
- Extra Trail Signs prepared for inventory for future posting.
- Battle plan for clearing the canal of trees etc., strategized with Dick. Permitting in operation, in meantime, Greg's
wife Pam of GIS printed maps of canal so we can mark where removal of trees, limbs, etc., is needed to develop
RVP for contractor bids. Sherm termed the canal GIS maps as being awesome.GPS markers are marked on the
maps. Committee members will mark areas along the canal on a walk-by of the canal on Feb. 11. Nick will have
template of what needs to be marked for removal.
- Harvesting of water chestnuts will be done above the Gatehouse in Nashua River.
- Good news for water chestnut, milfoil, etc. from the Mill Pond and canal will be done by the same company as last
year, using a new herbicide okayed by DES. No additional cost to city and also good is an after action report is
required.
- Joshua asked if anything can be done with same invasive species in Oxbow Lake with use of rowboats. Possibility
to be examined later.
- Request by Beverly Kovars of Nashua by letter to have a trail adopted in memory of her 18-year-old son, Taylor
who used Mine Falls frequently before his untimely passing. Nick said the department does have an Adopt-a-Park
program. Having some reservations about the idea, the committee okayed the adoption of the trail for cleaning with
the safety check offered by Peter Testa that the "adoption" be reviewed every two years.
- Request by Science teacher Mary Ann O'Connell at Pennichuck Middle School for trail maintenance by her
environmental group. Perhaps have them at a Trail Day.
- Nick explained her group did outstanding work at the Yudicky Farm and set up a trail at Roby Park also by use of
GPS.
- Nick is hopeful the permitting process for the canal clean up will proceed smoothly and depending upon what the
cost is may have to appear before the committee, BPW and Aldermanic Finance Committee.
- Nick will make a presentation before the Conservation Commission in March about the planned canal clean-up.
