ADJOURNMENT Page 1 of 6  MINUTES New Ulm Human Rights Commission Monday, July 28, 2025 at 5:15 p.m. City Hall Council Chambers Members Present: Sarah Leslie, Kristin Sprenger, Obehi Okojie, Carl Zeidler, Deb Egeland Members Absent: KC Ness, Katie Dorschner, Allie Lee, David Nissen Call to Order: Meeting called to order by Chair Kristin Sprenger. Approval of Minutes: Obehi Okojie moved to approve June 23, 2025 minutes, seconded by Deb Egeland, and passed by all members present. Budget Report: Reviewed the monthly financial report. No further discussion. Events Committee: Immigration Forum—An immigration forum presented by COPAL was held June 24 at the Public Library with NUCAT recording. Obehi and Sarah, both of whom attended the forum, provided a summary of the event. They reported 16-20 attendees, with significant audience participation during the Q&A. The forum focused on the Constitutional rights and responsibilities of observers during an immigration arrest. Welcome Week - Event is set for September 19 in City Hall parking lot. Three food trucks confirmed. Rec on the Go is scheduled to be there. Waiting to hear if the Park & Recreation Department’s bounce house is available; Kristin to follow up again. If not, then the Commission will rent a bounce house. Kristin is working on a flyer for organizations that want to participate. Sarah reserved an ADA accessible portable toilet, handwash station, and trash receptacles based on last year’s event feedback. Need to rent tables and chairs, prefer to get them locally. Sarah will contact a rental company if a local organization is not available. Sarah will bring a tent for shade. Kristin will bring three tables. A DJ will be there for music by the bounce house and will use the city outlet to power the equipment. Kristin will source discounted or donated ice cream and 1919 root beer for floats and bring the cost back to the committee for a vote at the next meeting. Kristin will work on a flyer to share with other City of New Ulm commissions, local nonprofits who may wish to display at a table, The Journal, and KNUJ. Carl asked if NUCAT will be present; Kristin will invite them. Bavarian Blast Parade – Had a good turnout by the Commission, and almost all the candy, lip balms, yard signs, etc. were distributed. Obehi Okojie moved to approve of buying 500 more lip balms and 500 more magnets, seconded by Deb Egeland, and passed by all members present. New Ulm Night Out – A couple more volunteers are needed. Obehi will buy more candy to distribute along with the remaining yard signs, magnets, stickers, and Allina Health bags. Page 2 of 6 Brown County Fair Booth –Volunteers needed. Only a few slots are filled. Each time slot has room for two volunteers; however, only one of those volunteers needs to be a Commission member. The Community Survey QR code will be displayed there. South Central Minnesota Pridefest Parade and Festival—Volunteers are needed to walk in this parade, which is shorter than Bavarian Blast. No vehicle is required. Education Committee: Living Without Limits—All panelists have been identified as an event on visual impairment. Lisa will organize a meeting for the Education Committee to plan the first event at the New Ulm Public Library. The Committee still needs one panelist for developmental disabilities, two to three panelists for autism, and one to two panelists for mental health conditions. The Education Committee would like additional input and ideas from Commission members for interested panelists for these and other topics. Lisa will continue to collect names of interested panelists and will schedule an Education Committee meeting. Other Business: Legislative Update: Nothing specific passed at this time, just keeping an eye on things as they develop. City Council Liaison: Need a Volunteer for July – September. Obehi volunteered. Date of Next Meeting: Next meeting will be Monday, August 25, 2025.
