Jordana Bloom Phil Carroll Dan Honan Kelley Johnson Paul Lundquist Dan Wiedemann LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL EDUCATION COMMITTEE Minutes of the Legislative Council Education Committee Meeting The Education Committee met on Tuesday March 27, 2018 in Council Chambers of the Municipal Center. Committee Chairman Dan Honan called the meeting to order at 7:32pm. Present: Phil Carroll, Kelley Johnson, Dan Wiedemann, Paul Lundquist, Jordana Bloom, Dan Honan. Also present were Michelle Ku, Board of Education Chair and Dr. Rodrigue, Superintendent of Schools, and Ron Bienkowski, Director of Business. Voter Comment: Katie Burke, 48 Taunton Hill Rd, spoke to ask for funding added back to the BOE budget to address anticipated bus/transportation issues next year relating to changes to better accommodate school start times. Also desires funding for the auditorium PA at Head of Meadow School. Old Business: 2018-2019 Board of Education Budget Dr. Rodrigue spoke to the impact of the high school on the budget (see Handout A). Noted that there have been staff reductions, but these were partly offset by the addition of a new program, Project Lead the Way. Dr. Rodrigue, Michelle Ku and Ron Bienkowski went on to address and discuss 21 questions that had been submitted by the LC Education Committee (see Handout B for questions and answers). Mr. Wiedemann moved that the Education Committee recommend to the LC to reduce the BOE request by $100,000, including RIS Carpet (Maintenance) for $20,000, MS auditorium sound system for $20,000, Special Education Contingency for $50,000, and replace an ASSO with an SSO for $10,000. Seconded by Mr. Carroll. Motion Failed -- 4 No, 2 Yes (Mr. Wiedemann, Mr. Carroll). Mr. Lundquist moved that the Education Committee recommend to the LC to accept the BOE budget as recommended by the BOF. Seconded by Ms. Johnson. Motion Passes -- 4 Yes, 2 No (Mr. Wiedemann, Mr. Carroll). Adjournment: Ms. Johnson moved to adjourn meeting at 9:30pm. Seconded by Dan Wiedemann. Dan Honan, Chairman
