All AIM Norman Neighborhood Workshops are not regular meetings of the AIM Norman Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee, but the Steering Committee will be invited to attend and this notice is being posted in compliance with the Oklahoma Open Meetings Act in the event of a quorum. Development Principles Board • Distribution of information is a challenge! People don’t know about cool things in Norman. • Multi modal? Consider trolleys, railroads, rail transportation, less dependency on cars. • Smart growth. Norman Today Board • Must explore ways to encourage active transportation methods to relieve street congestion as our population grows. • Retired population. Environmental Constraints Board • Explore how rural atmosphere is involved in decisions. Green ring with more dense development. • No more turnpikes in Oklahoma. Protect the watershed and farmland. • Protect lake and watershed. No more turnpikes. Future Land Use and Density • Re-evaluate why and how you want to grow. Cramming people in 1 area doesn’t work. • Need to infill before we grow east more • Griffin: duplex, small homes, units like those by the mall, retiree housing Housing Board • General Comments o Housing for all offender rehab o I am concerned how it (ADUs) will be zoned and look like. I am not against but would like more information. o More affordable senior living. The stock Norman has now is very expensive. o More opportunities for subsidized homes. Rental regulations. o Must find ways to subsidize and lower housing costs to prevent unhousing and instable citizens and families. o Need duplex, or other type of housing, that allows for multi-generations with privacy for each. o No zero lot line development, Houses need to be apart. Should not be able to straddle two houses roofs. o Norman needs to infill with different types of housing. o Not interested at all in ADUs in old established well-kept areas; it would be good in central areas. o Prioritize areas where parks and open space for multi-unit development. Mixed use walkable near the core. o Rent control. Do not spike rent by 300% and evict residents. o Transitional housing for unhoused. Three steps to forever home or stability o Turn parking lots into dwellings. o Zoning reform has been working in other cities to reduce rents and reduce homelessness. • If you have to move in the next several years, identify up to two types of housing options you would desire using green dots. (A dot could be the same type of house you are currently living in). Would love to see more trees everywhere. (Saw they can lower temps by 15-20 degrees). Stormwater Board • General Comments: o Put these “green” solutions into zoning codes, building codes, etc. Transportation Board • General Comments: o Any development along Hwy 9 needs to have access that does not enter or exit onto Highway 9. o Biking and walking is super dangerous. o No more turnpikes in Oklahoma anywhere. o No turnpikes. o No turnpikes in City limits, especially Norman. Noted an absence of turnpike stuff. Dirty killing turnpikes are a fuse to blow up all these suggested principles, and ideas for a people to live together! Community and neighborhoods are for living and working and playing like is presented. Impact is not presented for a possible road. Nothing for a city and population is a dirty killing toll taking expensive turnpike. A turnpike is no good for a city people. Too many bad impacts! Road through is a path of destruction. Messes up all these plans for people in a city. Nothing but a road to destruction. Appreciate everything done here. Thank you very much. No good for a city population. Do not let an authority tell you what to do! Thank you! o Reduce concrete use, no turnpike, and reduce speed. o Wider streets induce speeding… (Johns Hopkins). Need safer streets by design through updating engineering standards. Active Transportation Board • General Comments: o Do not buy right-of-way for a trail. o Keep east of 48th Norman rural. o Leave Indian Hills alone! No turnpike, no more taking land from people. o SH-09, make it free passage as much as possible. o This [along Indian Hills Road] should not be a trail. o Turnpikes (not needed). Need service roads. • Where do you or would you like to ride or walk to? o Work, school (for my kids), church, grocery store, amenities (everything!) o 48th NE needs a bike lane – lots of bike traffic • Where are more bike and pedestrian facilities most needed? o No responses. Water and Wastewater Board • General Comments: o Ensure water studies are done for large projects. No turnpikes. o Look at Comprehensive Norman Stormwater Plan… Calculate “impervious area sqft per housing unit” for the different densities. Also water usage per person per land use type affects water quality. Need prioritization of higher density housing. o Not in favor of reuse, but would be interested in using lawns for something other than water dependent grasses o Recycled water needs to be sent to groundwater for storage. We discharge too much water from Lake Thunderbird. • How do you feel about water reuse? o I would support recycling water back into Lake Thunderbird: 1 dot o I would support recycling water back into the drinking water treatment plant: 0 dots o I would support expanding other sources of supply: 1 dot • What is your biggest concern regarding the City of Norman’s wastewater system? o Water reclamation facility capacity and reliability: 0 dots o Quality of treated water discharged: 0 dots 3.
