HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION MINUTES CITY OF NORMAN April 23, 2018 The Human Rights Commission of the City of Norman, Cleveland County, State of Oklahoma, met in the Municipal Complex located at 201 West Gray Street on April 23, 2018, at 5:30 p.m., and notice and agenda of the meeting were duly posted 24 hours prior to the beginning of the meeting. Item 1, being: ROLL CALL PRESENT: Commissioners Kay Ham, Mary Lou Drywater, Kirsten T. Edwards, Chris Nanny, Sage Mauldin, Mary Womack ABSENT: Commissioners Marjaneh Seirafi-Pour, Daniel Dukes, Jackie Farley STAFF PRESENT: Assistant City Attorney Kristina Bell, Major David Teuscher, Legal Admin Tech Sarah Encinias Item 2, being: APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES OF THE JANUARY 22, 2018, HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION MEETING Commissioner Nanny moved to approve the Minutes of the January 22, 2018, meeting and motion was duly seconded by Commissioner Mary Lou Drywater. Chair, Kay Ham, called for a vote: all approved and none opposed. The Minutes for the January 22, 2018, meeting were approved by unanimous vote. Item 3, being: DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION REGARDING 2019 INTERFAITH BREAKFAST Suggestions were requested for a keynote speaker, and Commissioner Drywater recommended Reverend Chebon Kernell. Mr. Kernell lives in Moore, Oklahoma, and is very active in issues involving human rights. He regularly travels internationally and most recently attended a United Nations forum on indigenous issues. Commissioner Drywater will initiate contact with Mr. Kernell. Commissioner Nanny suggested the possibility of using Waving Wheat as a caterer for breakfast items. She will contact them and gather information regarding costs and options. Members then spoke of selecting a venue with a large common area that can accommodate all attendees. A final decision for the venue was not made at this time; however, Chair Ham Norman Human Rights Commission April 23, 2018 Page 2 advised she would research various options but that a decision must be made before or at the next commission meeting. Item 4, being: DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION ON FUTURE PROCLAMATIONS National Mobility Awareness Month and Mental Health Awareness Month were recommended as proclamations for May 2018. Commissioner Nanny will ask Taiya Crowe to accept the proclamation for National Mobility Awareness Month. Item 5, being: MISCELLANEOUS DISCUSSION Commissioner Nanny informed members of the City’s next ADA Self-Assessment and Transition Plan update meeting that is to be held May 9, 2018, from 6:00 – 9:00 pm at the Norman Public Library Central location. The self-evaluation findings will be presented, and input from the public is requested. She also mentioned that $4 million had been allocated for the plan and a full-time ADA Coordinator position is a possibility. Item 6, being: ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 6:05 pm. by unanimous vote.
