HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION MINUTES CITY OF NORMAN July 23, 2018 The Human Rights Commission of the City of Norman, Cleveland County, State of Oklahoma, met in the Municipal Complex located at 201 West Gray Street on July 23, 2018, at 5:30 p.m., and notice and agenda of the meeting were duly posted 24 hours prior to the beginning of the meeting. Item 1, being: ROLL CALL PRESENT: Commissioners Kay Ham, Daniel Dukes, Marjaneh Seirafi- Pour, Jackie Farley, Chris Nanny ABSENT: Commissioners Mary Lou Drywater, Kirsten Edwards, Mary Womack, Sage Mauldin STAFF PRESENT: Mayor Lynne Miller, Assistant City Attorney Kristina Bell, Captain Shawn Hawkins, Officer Ali Jaffrey, Legal Admin Tech Sarah Encinias Item 2, being: APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES OF THE APRIL 23, 2018, HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION MEETING Commissioner Farley moved to approve the Minutes of the April 23, 2018, meeting and motion was duly seconded by Commissioner Nanny. Chair Ham called for a vote: all approved and none opposed. The Minutes for the April 23, 2018, meeting were approved by unanimous vote. Item 3, being: DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION REGARDING THE BELOVED COMMUNITY SPEAKER SERIES Mayor Miller said she and Councilmember Breea Clark will host these meetings which will consist of four sessions. The Human Rights Committee will have direct involvement by being a sponsor and can help by making name tags and taking names. The Xenia Institute will participate, and a moderator will also be present. The first meeting is September 13 at OU with the second meeting planned for November 8 to be held at the Norman East Library. The speakers at these smaller-sized focus groups will be members of the community who will tell their story of good and bad situations they’ve experienced and how it ultimately affected them and their view of community life. The purpose of the meetings is to help build on forming a more inclusive community. Item 4, being: DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION REGARDING 2019 INTERFAITH BREAKFAST Norman Human Rights Commission July 23, 2018 Page 2 Chair Ham said Reverend Chebon Kernell, Executive Secretary of Native American and Indigenous Ministries of the General Board of Global Ministries, will be the keynote speaker. The location of the breakfast has yet to be determined but will probably be at McFarlin or another church that has the capacity for at least 200 attendees. Member Nanny is going to continue trying to contact Waving Wheat to speak to them about catering. Preferred food items include rolls, bagels, fruit, bread, pastries and cheeses. The per plate cost goal is $8 – $9 per plate. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. day is observed January 21, 2019, with the starting time moved to 9:00 a.m. Member Nanny asked if a thank you card was sent to CART for agreeing to help with transportation on their regular day off and Ms. Bell said Mayor Miller did send one. Legal Admin Tech, Sarah Encinias, will design the fliers this year as she did last year. Item 5, being: REPORT AND UPDATE ON CITY’S ADA TRANSITION PLAN By passing a resolution on June 26, City Council has agreed to appoint a Citizen Advisory Committee for the ADA Transition Plan. Member Nanny asked HRC members to tell anyone that may be interested in being a member of this new committee. Additional plan information can be found on the City’s website along with a survey and map. The Public Works department is planning an open house to gather additional public input. Item 6, being: DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION ON FUTURE PROCLAMATIONS Members requested the following proclamations:  August 19th as World Humanitarian Day  9/15/18 – 10/15/18 as Hispanic Heritage Month  October 2018 – Breast Cancer Awareness Month; Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender History Month  November 2018 – Native American Heritage Month  December 1st – World Aids Day  December 10th – Human Rights Day Item 7, being: MISCELLANEOUS DISCUSSION None. Item 8, being: ADJOURNMENT Commissioner Farley moved to adjourn the meeting and motion was duly seconded by Commissioner Dukes. Chair Ham called for a vote: all approved and none opposed. The meeting was adjourned at 6:54 p.m.
