Norman Public Library Board Meeting September 16th, 2024 The Norman Public Library Board met on Monday, September 16th, 2024 at 4:30 p.m. at the Norman Library Lab, 121 S. Santa Fe, Norman, Oklahoma 73069 Meeting Minutes Meeting was called to order at 4:30 Roll Call Sue Ringus (Chair), Jason Bingham (Vice-Chair), Jayme Shelton, Jody Foote, Debra Engel, Megan Straughan (Secretary) Not in attendance: Laura Doughty Introduction of Staff and Guests Caroline Dulworth, Director of Branch Services Mike Pierson, Norman West Branch Manager Kelsey Williamson, Norman East Branch Manager Kim Zahller, Children’s Services Assistant Will Merrick, Development Officer, PLS Foundation Aaron Pence, CTC Manager/Maker Lab Consider and vote to approve/ disapprove/ take other action on minutes from previous meeting No changes added Member Foote motioned to approve the minutes. Member Engel seconded the motion. The motion to approve minutes was unanimously approved. Guest Speaker: Will Merrick, Development Officer, Pioneer Library System Foundation Will Merrick spoke to the board regarding the foundation fundraising, events, goals, and projects. ● All 12 Branches have a fund that can be fundraised for separately ● Excel Online High School, Imagination Library (over 10K children registered), and STEAM education also all have separate funds ● Funding a book to every newborn to born at Norman Regional Hospital (paying for first book from Dolly Parton Imagination Library) ● Partnering with various community entities (including OU Athletics) to support programming Branch updates Kim Zahller gave a presentation on the Santa Fe Lab Location programming ● Story Times, Sensory Story Time, Bright Beginnings, Community Daycare Outreach, Baby Steps, Norman Public Schools outreach, and STEAM programming Kelsey Williamson presented on updates related to Norman East ● Added extra children’s programming in all ages with staff from Norman Central ● School outreach sites host librarians once a month for standards-based programming ● Librarians are also present in community-based partnerships, including JD McCarty Center and Little Axe Community Center ● Self-publishing and writing clubs available Mike Pierson presented on updates at Norman West ● Partnering with the Norman Arts Council to bring musicians/performances to the library ○ Focusing on world music ○ Indigenous Dance performance ● Partnering with OU to bring in other musicians ● Norman Public Schools outreach including book clubs at both NHS and NNHS, Alcott, and Truman ○ Book clubs available for both teachers and students Old Business No old business New Business No new business Board Comments Chair Ringus asked about the status of the central library’s renovation. The board discussed ways to keep citizens up to date on the progress of the project. Secretary Straughan commented that she received positive feedback from a parent with a teenager in the library internship program. Member Shelton brought up Voter Registration Day at the library on Sept 17th Comments from the Public No comments Next Meeting: Dec. 16, 2024, 4:30 pm; Norman Library East (Officer Elections) Adjournment Vice Chair Bingham motioned to adjourn. Member Foote seconded the motion. Vote to adjourn was unanimous.
