Norman Public Library Board Minutes
March 20, 2017
The Public Library Board of the City of Norman, Cleveland County, State of Oklahoma, met in
Room A/B of the Norman Public Library on the 20*^ day of March, 2017, at 4:30 p.m., and notice
and agenda of the meeting were posted at the Norman Public Library at 225 North Webster 24
hours prior to the beginning of the meeting.

ITEM 1, being:
ROLL CALL
Present: Chairman Mauldin, Vice Chair Kimberling, Bird, Engle, Foote and Ringus
Absent: McCutcheon, Moran and Sykes
ITEM 2, being:

ITEM 3, being:
APPROVAL OF DECEMBER 20, 2016 MEETING MINUTES
Bird made the motion and Foote seconded to approve the December 20, 2016 meeting minutes.
The vote was taken with the following results:
AYE: Chairman Mauldin, Vice Chair Kimberling, Bird, Engle, Foote and Ringus
NAY: None
ITEM 4, being:
SPECIAL REPORT/NEW CENTRAL BRANCH STATUS/CONTRACT TO CITY
COUNCIL: TERRY FLOYD. DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR, CITY OF NORMAN
The construction documents were approved 2-23-27 by the Library Ad Hoc Committee and the
contract is now out for bid. Bids will be opened on March 23, 2017 and a recommendation will
be taken to the next City Council meeting to award a contract. The site will take approximately
24 months to complete.
The 78,700 sq. ft. building will be LEED certified, have a green roof, geological gardens and
native landscaping. The entrance to the library will be connected to Legacy Trail.
ITEM 5, being:
NORMAN FORWARD ART PROJECT REPORT; CARLA KIMBERLING
The Public Art Project Committee received 115 resumes. The selection panel utilized specific
criteria and narrowed the resumes to three artists.
Those three artists came to Norman for a site visit on March 2 and spent the day learning about
Norman and the library project. They also visited the construction site on East Alameda.
The artists will have approximately six weeks to prepare proposals for the selection panel. The
panel will determine a project to take to City Council for approval.
ITEM 6, being:
STAFF REPORTS AND UPDATES
a. 2017 “Big Read” Events
Events for the Big Read book. Being Mortal, are being completed. There were panel
discussions and a showing of a documentary. Feedback has been very positive.
b. Summer Reading Programs and Events.
The adult summer reading program, “Readers Extravaganza”, will kick off June 1 at the Central
Library. Books, CDs and DVDs will be on display. A local author will be in attendance for
discussion. The teen program, “Taste of Books”, will be held on June 6. The children’s program.
Build a Better World, will begin on May 30.
At the end of the summer, rather than incentives for the children, the Friends will donate money
for the children to vote on their favorite charities. Children can help build a better world by
meeting their reading and kindness goals.
At Norman West a reading program for all ages will kick off June 3 with a" How to Festival”
featuring the PLS Maker Mobile, STEAM kits and more.
c. Main and West Side Branch Updates
Circulation statistics were distributed for a three-month period. Library access for Central and
West showed an average of 1,433 visits per day.
