Norman Public Library Board Minutes December 18, 2017 The Public Library Board of the City of Norman, Cleveland County, State of Oklahoma, met in the Pioneer Library Administration Conference Room adjacent to the Norman Public Library West, 300 Norman Center Court, Norman, OK 73072 on the 19th day of December, 2017, at 4:30 p.m., and notice and agenda of the meeting were posted at the Norman Public Library at 225 North Webster 24 hours prior to the beginning of the meeting. The vote was taken with the following results:  AYE: Chairman Mauldin, Vice Chair Kimberling, Engle, Turner, Bird, Moran, and Ringus NAY: None ITEM 4, being: COMMENTS/RECOMMENDATION BY TERRY FLOYD, DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR, CITY OF NORMAN Review of drone overview pictures and progress of the East library showing dirt work, drainage and detention, and parking. Review elements of the design features including materials such as corten steel panels and wood siding, a sky light named the “clear story,” and xeriscape landscaping using native plants. By the design of the landscaping the first day may look bare but in time will fill in and require less watering than otherwise. The corten steel currently looks silver but is designed to rust to a point and then stop and the recommendation was to weather on the building rather than pre-weather so it would be more even. In front of the building Alameda St is scheduled to be 4 lane and a request has been entered for the sidewalk to be extended. James Johnson is completing the art piece which features a hole in the sculpture which will line up with the solstice to let the light through. Considerations have been added such as conduit so the piece can be lit for example. Furniture, fixtures, and equipment package will go out in January to be bid on. Reviewed the Central Library project. James Garner Ave will not have an entrance to the library, the intersection will be built at James Garner Ave and Acres. James Garner Ave will be designed to be a Boulevard to Downtown with a median designed as a bioswale to help filter rain water. Steel is going up and construction is progressing, the project is on pace. For the East library a new 24 hour library box will be purchased so the one currently located at Irving will stay in place to study it’s use once the East library is open. By the next meeting we should be meeting the new East branch manager and planning a ribbon cutting in 2018. In the process of purchasing materials for the East branch there will be some classics but many newer copyright books to follow the success of the West branch’s higher rate of check outs with a newer collection. The Central library has a purge happening and Friends of the Library will assist in reselling books in good condition, even online through Amazon, which will provide money for the library. Other books will be given away and bins will be provided for recycling poor condition books without having to go through the effort of tearing them up in advance. ITEM 5, being: STAFF REPORTS AND UPDATES a. Central and West Side Branch Updates Topping out ceremony of adding the last piece of steel to a building will hopefully be coordinated the 1st week of January. 1% for art project, as part of the Norman Forward project as voted on by citizens, for the Central library has led to 200 artist submissions online from all over, both international and local. There will be 3 finalists with 2 alternates selected. Recommendations will be made to the City Council who ultimately approves the artist who would receive a $230,000 budget and have a site visit in January. Hopefully selections will be made by March 16th and will coordinate a simultaneous installation with branch opening in 2019. b. Featured upcoming Norman Public Library Programs and Events Review of calendared items for the branches. Norman West branch music programs such as Chanukah Tunes, the Norman Ballet Company’s Nutcracker, Children’s Chamber Music, St. Stevens hand bells, MG quartet, and others. Children’s crafts include a solstice sun craft, thank you note, and countdown to Christmas. March 3rd a Chinese New Year event will be presented by the Confucius Institute and in February there will be Argentine dance class. As part of the partnered program with Eat Smart and Paisley Cafe the library will host a Healthy New Year cooking event in January, followed by a Mediterranean cooking class in February. As part of the libraries programming for Black History month February 11th will feature the annual African American Read In and Crowns Tea event. Spring Break programs are in planning along with a 1st sign language class for babies and a children’s Wrinkle in Time program coinciding with the movie. Ongoing programs include the Filmmakers Club, Robotics and Coding programs, and Science Café Norman. As part of a partnered outreach program with Norman public schools library staff is reaching classes at Longfellow Middle School in robotics and electronic music and a weekly class at Dimensions Academy. Other classes include a financial planning workshop, Facebook for business, and an adult class in computer program languages C++ and Python which featured many graduate students from OU among its participants. c. Oher Updates Guac & Roll event with Rick Bayliss was a success with autographed cookbooks still available. 3 days after Thanksgiving almost 2,000 movies were checked in. A new “animated” section was created for files that are PG (and not G so not included in the children’s section). Frequently see rushes before a holiday or a prediction of bad weather. ___________________________________________________________________________ ITEM 6, being: OLD BUSINESS None ____________________________________________________________________________ ITEM 7, being: NEW BUSINESS Invitation to Interfaith Breakfast Monday, January 15, 2018, in celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday.
