Norman Public Library Board Minutes June 17, 2019 The Public Library Board of the City of Norman, Cleveland County, State of Oklahoma, met at the Norman East Branch Library, 3051 Alameda, Norman, OK 73071 on the 17th day of June, 2019, at 4:30 p.m., and notice and agenda of the meeting were posted at the Norman Public Library at 225 North Webster 24 hours prior to the beginning of the meeting. Note: bold formatting indicates action items. ITEM 1, being: ROLL CALL Present: Chairman Mauldin, Vice Chair Kimberling, Ringus, Foote, Moran, Turner, McCutcheon, and Bird* *Arrived after 5:03 PM, absent for items 1-6, present for items 7 and after. Absent: Engel ____________________________________________________________________________ ITEM 2, being: INTRODUCTION OF STAFF AND GUESTS Library Staff: Caroline Dulworth, Central Branch Manager; Mike Pearson, West Branch Manager; Aaron Pence, Computer Training Center Manager, Kelly Sitzman, East Branch Manager; Saidah Yakasai Pioneer Library Staff: Lisa Wells, Executive Director City Staff: (None) Guests: Breea Clark, Mayor-elect and City Councilmember Ward 6 ____________________________________________________________________________ ITEM 3, being: APPROVAL OF MARCH 11, 2019 MEETING MINUTES Ringus made the motion and Moran seconded to approve the March 11, 2019 meeting minutes. The vote was taken with the following results: AYE: Chairman Mauldin, Vice Chair Kimberling, Ringus, Foote, Moran, Turner, and McCutcheon NAY: None ITEM 4, being: REMARKS: MAYOR-ELECT BREEA CLARK Discussed Importance of libraries, especially the diversity programming offers. We need more emphasis to diversity and inclusion in our city. Change isn’t possible without libraries and branch special input for access. CART does not currently make library stops, but now that the City controls CART there is more freedom to change and control routes. There will be new program for Book Club with the Mayor in August. ITEM 5, being: SUMMER SOLSTICE AT EAST SIDE NORMAN PUBLIC LIBRARY Several events including 7:00 AM yoga on patio 4:30 PM Jim Johnson (artist) of Prairie Wind and Breea Clark and the Norman Arts Council will be there. Solar printing program for teens and the solar mural will be going on. They will give out a laser cut ornament or book mark. ITEM 6, being: NORMAN FORWARD ART PROJECT REPORT: VICE CHAIR CARLA KIMBERLING Central library art dedication may be August 2, 2019 at 5:00 PM with artist speaking at dedication. ITEM 7, being: STAFF REPORTS AND UPDATES Aaron Pence - # Summer Learning Challenge – about 2,000 signed up for Central, Gave out dates for tech lab. ITEM 8, being: EAST, CENTRAL, AND WEST SIDE BRANCH UPDATES West – Mike Pierson: Oklahoma Fancy Donors, Programs for Jazz in June – during the day have artist clinic, 7/7 Mariachi, 7/28 Ebony voices – presentation of Dorothy Ellis. East – Kelly Sitzman: Visitor Count up 62%, 386 Summer Reading sign ups (including adult and teen) with 212 children and over 60% actively logging, 37,000 visitors from Jan-June. Smithsonian exhibit will be the first site in Oklahoma, flows from when you walk in throughout the library to encourage visitors to walk through, all 5 Smithsonian sites have reps on site the 28th, Norman Chamber will do a sneak peek, partner with water treatment folks, Book discussions related (OU water experts, teen group with Mindy McGuiness – water as a scarcity in a dystopian society), rain barrel program for the City of Norman to show how to have or make one, and a City of Norman storm water presentation. There will 18 volunteers as part of the exhibit, some shelving as well as other tasks trying to tailor experience to them. Central – Caroline Dulworth: Construction: closest parking lot is complete with green space (storm water part) and putting in landscaping. Originally planned local trees (Burr Oaks) but due to conditions need hardy varieties. Glass boxes arriving next week for children’s area and local history room. Question of when will it open regularly being asked, should be soon, floors and paint are going on. Dates set for delivery of new materials: Aug 22nd shelving DVD & audio books, next week 26th, 28th, 30th 3 deliveries of new materials. Still culling, getting rid of damaged books: some given to Friend of the Library if in condition to sell, some given away, really bad condition bat liner recycling. Still looking at an assembly line, maybe school and volunteers, to pass books but more as a ceremony. Probably looking at early Fall for completion with a grad opening. August 2nd 5:00PM is tentative art dedication event. ITEM 9, being: FEATURED UPCOMING NORMAN PUBLIC LIBRARY PROGRAMS AND EVENTS Central: Dog & Cat Days of Summer – last program end of July 20th and will let animals in the building: People bringing their own animals for portraits and how to register & tag your dog. Tech Lab Word Premier afterwards as end of Summer Celebration. ITEM 10, being: OLD BUSINESS None. ____________________________________________________________________________ ITEM 11, being: NEW BUSINESS None. ____________________________________________________________________________ ITEM 12, being: BOARD COMMENTS Sue Ringus: Entrepreneurial Program from Kazakhstan were brought to the library and made members for a month while there. The group found it incredible and was part of their first week in Norman. NPS stories of the month shared Erica Bird: Norman Board of Realtors currently alternating monthly meetings between Norman Public Schools Admin building and City Council Chambers, arranging to have the Central Library be a 3rd location to alternate between. Once open the first meeting held there will include a tour, it’s important for realtors engaging with outsiders considering settling in Norman to see the type of culture and public offerings we have. Erica Bird: Urban Land Institute is also interested in coming down for a tour before the library opens. There are over 250 members in the state, some in Norman but most in Oklahoma City and Norman. This is also an opportunity for the larger market areas to come to Norman to see the type of projects the city is doing and hopefully engage these thoughtful local developers to make more investments in Norman. ____________________________________________________________________________ ITEM 13, being: COMMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC Working Moms would like to see more craft type activities on the weekend. Lisa Wells: We hit goal for sign up and log points (one million points) “Out of this World Day” and will give books away. Well baby at McClain and Cleveland counties. MSR, architect for East and Central library, also designed the Tulsa library and won awards. They are submitting our libraries for regional awards. So there is the potential we will have an award winning library design. Invite for the volunteer recognition by the City of Norman and swearing in for Breea Clark as Mayor. ____________________________________________________________________________ ITEM 14, being: NEXT MEETING Next meeting will be Monday September 16th, 2019, 4:30PM at the Central Library Branch (most likely the current location and not the new location). ____________________________________________________________________________ ITEM 15, being: ADJOURNMENT Bird made the motion and McCutcheon seconded to adjourn the Norman Library Advisory Board meeting.
