Norman Library Board Meeting
December 20, 2021
Meeting Location: Norman Central Public Library,103 W. Acres St.,
Norman, Oklahoma 73069
Meeting was called to order at 4:37
Roll Call
Members attending in person: Sue Ringus (Chair), Jayme Shelton (Vice-Chair),
Jason Bingham, Bianca Gordon, Tim Mauldin, Megan Straughan (Secretary),
Jody Foote
Members absent: Sarah Moran, Debra Engels
Introduction of Staff and Guests
Staff: Caroline Dulworth, Associate Director
Guest Speaker: Kathleen Romero, Friends of the Norman Library
Guest presentation: Kathleen Romero, Friends of the Norman Library
FONL Missions and Projects
• Put books in the hands of the community and support the library and its
programs
• Staff scholarship program
• Funding gaps for staff support, library animals, makers lab supplies, etc.
• FONL is looking for ways to support the library as it navigates the
pandemic
• 501(c)(3)
Bookstore details
• Not accepting donations at this time
• Bookstore is open when the library is open
• Everything is sold for $1-2, occasional sales of more expensive books on
Amazon
• Sold over $9,000 of books at the last sale in October 2021
• Unused donations are donated to thrift stores and recycling programs
• Books can be donated by ringing the doorbell by the back door of the
library near the drive through book return
• Donations that cannot be used include encyclopedias and VHS tapes
• When donations are being accepted, they can be dropped off Tuesdays,
Thursdays, and Saturdays 10am-2pm
Volunteer information
• Membership is $10.00
• Volunteer hours are Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays 10am-2pm
(some volunteers work independently)
• Volunteers can contact FONL on facebook or their website
• Volunteer duties include sorting, stacking, restocking, evaluating books
• Minimum age for volunteers is 13
• The next FONL meeting is January 25th.
Goals/Future Planning
• During the pandemic, FONL has lost volunteers
• Volunteer recruitment and needs assessment will be the next focus
• FONL wants to focus on how to support the library’s unique needs during
the pandemic
Discussion
• The board explored ways we can be more involved and communicative
with FONL
• Identified marketing and outreach opportunities
• Encouraged/explored more events at Norman East and West, and
discussed the option of events at The Well
Consider and vote to approve/ disapprove/take other action on minutes
from previous meeting
Member Shelton moved to approve the previous minutes. Member Gordon
seconded a motion to approve. Voted by a show of hands, Vote Passed to
approve the minutes. 7 yes, 0 no.
Branch updates
Associate Director Caroline Dulworth presented updates on all three Norman
branches
Norman East
• Story time may need a covering because of the weather
• Teen advisory board across all 3 branches
• Hiring new staff
• Outreach to Silver Elm retirement home. Helping residents operate
ebooks.
Norman Central
• Library is a partner at The Well. New programming will happen at The Well
throughout the year, including using the Health Literacy Grant to do
cooking classes with farmers market ingredients. Exercise classes may be
added.
• Yoga at Norman Central Tuesdays at 915.
• Recently completed a Charcuterie class
• Healthy holiday cooking class
• Attendance has been somewhat low for cooking classes
• Story time is happening outside
• Staff is exploring options for pandemic-safe story time as numbers change
• Adult programming is happening as usual
• African American Read In in February. Exploring virtual and in person
options
• Some book clubs are meeting in person
• Teen book club has started (graphic novels, comics, YA)
• NPL won “Best Movement and Dance” in the Christmas parade.
• NPL in the Oklahoma Conservation Convention Calendar as the May page
• Landscaping has been mowed down for the winter. Manageable planting
to be completed in the future.
• Bus Stop installed
Norman West
• Using Health grant to do Tai Chi every week
• Staff is exploring story time alternatives- the west location is difficult for
outside events because of the large parking lot and no grassy or covered
areas

Meeting schedule for 2022
The schedule will follow the same pattern as 2021, 4:30pm on the 3rd
Monday in the last month of every quarter
Approval of 2022 Meeting Schedule
Member Gordon moved to approve the 2022 Meeting Schedule. Member Mauldin
seconded the motion. Vote to approve the 2022 Meeting Schedule by hand. 7
yes, 0 no.
Board Comments
Member Mauldin discussed The Well as a potential site for more community
involvement. Identified that SNAP benefits can be used a the farmer’s market.
Booths at The Well for the farmers market are being rented right now, so projects
should be considered now.

to adjourn by hand. 7 yes, 0 no.
