TREE BOARD April 2, 2018 The Tree Board of the City of Norman, Cleveland County, State of Oklahoma, met in the Study Session Room on the 2nd day of April 2018 at 4:00 P.M. ITEM 1, being: ROLL CALL Present: Chairman Menzie and Commissioners Fagin, Janaway, Lavastida, Spain, and Winegardner Absent: Commissioners Grisso Tardy: Commissioner Huffman City Officials Present: James Briggs, City of Norman Park Planner Karla Chapman, Administrative Technician IV Lisa Griggs, Senior Program Coordinator ITEM 2, being: APPROVAL OF THE MARCH 5, 2018 MEETING MINUTES Commissioner Spain made the motion and Commissioner Fagin seconded to approve the minutes. The vote was taken with the following results: YEAH: Chairman Menzie and Commissioners Fagin, Janaway, Lavastida, Spain, and Winegardner NAY: None ITEM 3, being: APPROVAL OF THE AGENDA Commissioner Winegardner made the motion and Commissioner Lavastida seconded to approve the agenda. The vote was taken with the following results: YEAH: Chairman Menzie and Commissioners Fagin, Janaway, Lavastida, Spain, and Winegardner NAY: None _________________________________________________________________________________________________ Commissioner Huffman arrived at the meeting at 4:06 p.m. _________________________________________________________________________________________________ Tree Board Page 2 of 3 April 2, 2018 ITEM 4, being: SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS Commissioner Janaway said the Park Foundation has and will continue to set up a booth at the 2nd Friday Art Walk. He said the Park Foundation has signage stating “We need your $2.00 donation for the ReLeaf Berry Road Project,” and have raised some money. The Tree Board will partner with the Park Foundation at the 2nd Friday Art Walk but will have a separate booth. _________________________________________________________________________________________________ ITEM 5, being: RELEAF BERRY ROAD PROJECT Commissioner Janaway said the Park Foundation planted eight (8) trees at Berry Road Baptist Church and another two trees, one each, at 933 N. Berry Road and at 920 N. Berry Road. He said the church was a great staging area and Chairman Menzie agreed. Commissioner Huffman said a lot of Rotarians showed up to assist Commissioner Janaway took pictures for a future press release he will send out. Chairman Menzie said he would continue to look for approximately 10 places to plant trees along Berry Road; however, the trees will need to be planted in the fall since spring is nearly over. ITEM 6, being: EARTH DAY EVENT ACTIVITIES Ms. Lisa Griggs, Senior Program Coordinator said Norman Earth Day Event is scheduled for Sunday, April 22nd at Reaves Park. She asked whether the Tree Board would have a booth and the Board discussed and said yes they would work out a schedule to cover the booth. Chairman Menzie said the Tree Board and Park Foundation generally work together to support the event. Chairman Menzie said Tree Wizard will have a booth again this year and he will bring the Tree Board banner. The Board discussed and said the Tree Board will set up a booth and have a donation box if anyone wanted to donate. Ms. Griggs said she is still waiting to hear from the State Forestry Office regarding tree seedlings that can be given away to the public. ITEM 7, being: MISCELLANEOUS COMMENTS Chairman Menzie said he attended the Arbor Day luncheon at the Capital in March and assisted in planting a tree at the A.G. Building. Ms. Griggs asked who will represent the Tree Board in accepting the Arbor Day Proclamation at the April 10th meeting and Chairman Menzie said he would be at the meeting to accept the proclamation. Ms. Griggs said Oklahoma Electric Cooperative (OEC) will be giving away approximately 150 trees and Oklahoma Gas and Electric (OGE) will be giving away approximately 1500 trees to their customers. She said the customers will sign up online, pick up the trees, and plant the trees themselves. Chairman Menzie asked what the tree species will be but Ms. Griggs said OEC and OGE have not relayed to her that information. Tree Board Page 3 of 3 April 2, 2018 Councilmember-Elect Joe Carter, Ward 2, arrived at the meeting at 4:30 p.m. and introduced himself to the Tree Board. Mr. Carter said he is very passionate about trees and would like to see the City do something about protecting the trees of certain sizes and/or historic. __________________________________________________________________________________________________ ITEM 8, being: ADJOURNMENT Chairman Huffman made the motion and Commissioner Lavastida seconded to adjourn.
