STATE OF CONNECTICUT DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION  ANNOUNCEMENT The Connecticut Department of Transportation (Department) will conduct a Public Information Meeting concerning Major Safety and Operational Improvements - Route 82 Corridor (West Main Street) from New London Turnpike to Asylum/Mechanic Streets on Wednesday, September 16, at the Norwich City Hall, Council Chambers, 100 Broadway, Norwich, Connecticut at 7:00 p.m. The project is identified as Prospective State Project No. 103-TMP1. The purpose of the project is to address safety and operational problems along the Route 82 corridor between New London Turnpike and the Asylum/Mechanic Street intersection. This portion of Route 82, a major four lane un-divided arterial connecting downtown Norwich to local businesses and I-395, lacks dedicated left turn lanes at intersections and has a high density of un-signalized, high volume commercial driveways. These conditions contribute to high multi- vehicle crash rates and congestion. The proposed use of a raised median with modern roundabouts at major intersections will greatly improve safety, reduce delay, and promote safe access to businesses. There are rights-of-way impacts associated with the proposed improvements, primarily at the intersections due to the roundabout geometry, but also along the roadway due to widening for the median and adequate shoulders. The rights-of-way involvement will include total acquisitions, partial acquisitions and/or slope easements to accommodate the improvements. The Public Informational Meeting is being held to afford a full opportunity for public participation and to allow open discussion of any views and comments the community may have concerning this proposed project. The meeting facility is ADA accessible. Language assistance is provided at no cost to the public, and efforts will be made to respond to requests for assistance. Plans of the proposed project will be on display for public review. Department personnel will be available during the meeting to discuss this project.
