Commission for Persons with Disabilities Regular Meeting September 6, 2018, 6:00 PM Room 319, Norwich City Hall Minutes • Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 6:00 PM. • Attendance Present: Kevin Harkins, Victor Harley, Cynthia Litton, Laurieann Messore, Lottie Scott, Elanah Sherman Absent: No absences Others present: Brigid Marks, Norwich ADA Coordinator • Determination of Quorum: It was determined that a quorum was present (6/6). • Approval of August 2, 2018 Minutes: On a motion from Kevin, seconded by Laurie, the Minutes were unanimously approved as presented. • Citizen Comments: None • Communications: None • Old Business 1) Commission Vacancies: No changes. Tabled until November. 2) By-laws Update: No changes. Tabled until November. 3) Taste of Italy. Laurie offered to both provide and set up a table and canopy for the event. (Laurie will also bring supplies home.) The group accepted the offer. Elanah will bring chairs. (No longer a need for Kevin to loan a table and make canopy arrangements with Lion’s Club.) Elanah passed around copies of a new draft brochure; Victor made a correction. Elanah will bring copies of the corrected brochure to the event. New shift coverage is: 10:30 – 3:00 Elanah 3:00 – 6:00 Laurie and Cindy 4) Disability Awareness Week. Bulletin Editor-in-Chief Jim Conrad will be meeting with Elanah on September 12 at 11:00 AM about covering the week. Anyone interested in joining Elanah for the meeting should confirm with her by the day before the meeting. Disability Awareness Week now appears on the library website, although Elanah has been working with library staff to develop a more appropriate graphic image. Members agreed that the current image – a wheelchair at the bottom of stairs – needs revision. Kevin continues to pursue media coverage; Lottie suggested that this include TV. Elanah and Kevin finalized  proclamation language with the Mayor’s Office. Kevin suggested that members spread the word in their social networks. Elanah announced that the Municipal Roundtable and Legislative Panel are now organized. Lottie suggested that Brigid arrange for City managers to be released for Elanah’s ADA workshop. Lottie will contact Backus and UCFS for participation in the Resource Fair. Elanah is reinstalling at the library her 2010 exhibit “Character and Characters: The Disability Rights Movement in Eastern Connecticut, 1980 – 2000.” The banner, funded by NPU, is ready to go into production. • New Business: None • Adjournment: On a motion from Kevin, seconded by Lottie, the meeting was unanimously adjourned at 7:01 PM. The next meeting will be at 6 PM on Thursday, October 4th, 2018 at Norwich City Hall in Room 319.
