NORWICH ICE RINK AUTHORITY MINUTES FROM MEETING HELD SEPTEMBER 30, 2009 Authority Attendance: Mike Goldblatt, Mike Schermerhorn, Cheryl Ritacco, Judy Deglin, Doug Barlow and Rich Wolak Absent: Dean Pfeifer Guest: Jim Sanca, Mia Sanca and Mike Arnone Meeting was called to order by Mike Schermerhorn at 6:15. A quorum was present. Minutes Doug motion to accept rich second Public Comments There were no public comments Correspondence There was no correspondence Reports Manager Jim Sanca reported on the following: • Learn to Skate has 90 participants, slightly lower than last year. Flyers are being distributed to local schools to create interest. • Rink will run a Learn to Skate program at Connecticut College. It will probably start in October. The program will be held on Sunday mornings for 2 hours. • The Rink is in the process of installing a jumping harness on ice. The Rink is working with the coaches to secure proper usage and training. • A new figure skating class, USFS Moves in the Field, is now offered at The Rink on Tuesday evenings. • Bernie Cassell began hockey skating and skills sessions with Southeastern Connecticut Youth Hockey in September. Feedback from Bernie and the league have been positive toward the program. • Southeastern Connecticut Youth Hockey has the same number of teams as last year however there are older skaters than the mite level. • Friday night sticktime sessions for high school hockey players began in September. • The Rink will be present at the Waterford Car Show at the Crystal Mall in early October. • Currently meeting with regional recreational departments to advertise in their program books. • Flyers are being distributed to schools in Putnam, Griswold, Colchester, St. Patricks, Sacred Heart, St Josephs, Lisbon, Groton and Preston. • Haunted House is back again this year on October 23rd & 24th, it has been extended to 2 days in 2009. • The new Zamboni Grill, the concession stand at The Rink, has been open for a couple of months. Business has been ok but should pick up when the hockey season is in full swing. • July utilities charges were up from prior year but were down for the month of August. July was a 39 day cycle and contributed to the increase. • Expenses are up from last year at this time. Much needed maintenance was done on The Rink interior and exterior this summer. In House program expenses were much higher this year; Jim is going to research why and report back to The Authority at the next meeting. • The first two months of the 2009- 2010 fiscal year show a deficit of $88,000. Jim feels positive that the fiscal year will end in the black. • Pro shop is now being managed by Mark Nine. He is also responsible for other Rink maintenance duties. He has worked in rink pro shops in the past and has demonstrated a lot of leadership skills. Jim has proposed raising his salary from $11.00/hr to $14.00/hr. The Authority is in favor of the increase. Old Business There was no old business New Business There was no new business Adjournment The meeting was adjourned at 7:15pm.
