Public Safety Committee Meeting Taftville Volunteer Fire Department May 12, 2010 Minutes Committee Members Present Alderman William Nash Alderman H Tucker Braddock Jr. Committee Members Not Present Alderwoman Jackie Caron Administration and Staff Present Alan H. Call to Order – Quorum Alderman William Nash called the meeting to order at 7:03 p.m. It was determined a quorum is present. II. Approval of Minutes Alderman H Tucker Braddock Jr. motions to approve the March 10, 2010 Public Safety Meeting Minutes. Motion was seconded by Alderman William Nash. All in favor, the motion passed. III. Correspondence Alderman William Nash asks if there is any correspondence. There is none. IV. Citizen Comment Alderman William Nash asks if there are any Citizens who wish to address the Committee. Dick Benoit asks what it would take to have Norwich become a Regional Dispatch Center. It would make Norwich eligible for State and Federal funds that are available to Regional Dispatch Centers. V. New Business a. Request for a Review of the Flood Response Alderman William Nash requests that all departments submit a review of their work during the storms, including items they had available readily and any needs that they had difficulty obtaining. Alderman Nash would like this review for the June meeting. Some discussion ensued regarding Reverse 911 System as well. Public Safety Committee Meeting May 12, 2010 Page 2 VI. Old Business a. ATV operation in the Dunham and Albert Street area. Update from Lieutenant Pat Daley. Lieutenant Pat Daley states that he spoke with the responsible party (the offenders) and there have been no further complaints. It would appear they understood and have ceased their ATV riding on that property. b. Truck Traffic on Lower Blissville Road. Update from Lieutenant Pat Daley. Lieutenant Pat Daley states that he spoke with Bob’s Store about their CO for the property as it pertains to Blissville Road. Bob’s is looking into ways to eliminate the problem. Lieutenant Daley will check in to see how Bob’s is dealing with the truck traffic and continue to monitor the situation. VII. Other a. Any other business appropriate to come before the committee Yantic Chief Frank Blanchard informs the Committee and any other interested parties that there will be a Water Supply Drill in Yantic on Upper Scotland Road (by 395) on June 6 at 7:30 am and will last for about 3 – 4 hours. Lieutenant Murray is spearheading the operation. b. Yantic Chief Frank Blanchard also informs the Committee that there was a failure of the 33-66 radio system at around 2 pm on May 11. Norwich Dispatchers overcame the system interruption and firefighters responded to the Firehouse sirens (which is the backup to the radio service). The Radio System was repaired by the time the call was cleared. Lieutenant Pat Daley explains that the Firehouse Sirens are the backup system to dispatch as there are 2 systems required. c. A request to the DOT was made for the addition of a cut-through on Rte 395. A letter was sent but there has been no response. Alderman William Nash requests a copy of the letter so another attempt can be made. d. Alderman H Tucker Braddock Jr. asks if the National Guard needs to be notified of the delays that occurred during the flooding. Chief Fusaro believes it may be a good idea. Lieutenant Daley notes that the requirements for assistance from the National Guard are very specific. VIII. Adjournment Alderman H Tucker Braddock Jr. motions to adjourn at 7:57 p.m. Alderman William Nash seconds the motion and it passes unanimously. Meeting adjourned.
