ROSE CITY SENIOR CENTER 8 Mahan Drive, Norwich, Connecticut 06360 (860) 889-5960 fax: (860) 885-1160 SENIOR AFFAIRS COMMISSION Meeting of March 16, 2009 Members in Attendance: Chairperson Gen Bergendahl, Vice Chairperson Olive Buddington, Secretary Margaret Aldrich, Regular Members, Michael Lahan, Jacquelyn Randall, and Alternate Members Antoinette Gwiazdowski, Frank Jacaruso, and Jan Stewart. Attending staff members were Beverly Goulet, Mike Wolak and Anne Barriere. Chairperson Gen Bergendahl determined that a quorum was present and called the meeting to order at 9:04 a.m. Minutes: Accepted as submitted. Communications: None Human Services Report: Budget meetings with the City continue and it comes as no surprise it is a difficult year. The City depends on State and Federal money and all signs point to severe budget cuts and layoffs across the City. Senior Center Report: Over the winter we had 115 members sign up for the Fitness Room and they have scanned in as using it over 1,000 times. For Programs in general, it has been a busier winter than usual even with all the bad weather we have had. Lunch program: Mike met with TVCCA about the lunch program and they discussed bringing back the homemade meals on a trial basis. Starting in April they will be offered twice a week. They have to prove they can get the numbers and make a profit to continue longer or add more days. Remember, it is a “suggestion donation” so seniors who cannot afford are not asked to pay so anyone who can pay it is encouraged to add a little extra. Commission members are invited to come and check out the meals and even help serving if you are available. Serving begins at 11:45 a.m. If you would like to eat, please order your meals at least 3 working days ahead. We are doing well with the Friday Hot Breakfast meals. Mike and Dana started with the cooking but we now have a couple volunteers helping regularly also. You do not need to order ahead for the breakfasts. Tomorrow’s Corned Beef and Cabbage Dinner Fundraiser is sold out. For those with tickets it will begin at noon. Chairperson’s Report/Legislative Report: None. 2 Other Business: Bev was recently honored by the Bethsaida Community of Norwich, which houses women who are homeless or at risk, with their first Carol Croteau Award. Jan Stewart wanted to also give congratulations to Mike and Dana for the Valentine’s Day Cabaret recently held at the Center. The music was outstanding and a wonderful time was had by all. Old Business: None New Business: None Next Meeting: Monday, April 20, 2009, at 9:00 a.m., at the Rose City Senior Center. Respectfully submitted, Margaret Aldrich Margaret Aldrich, Secretary MA/acb Regular meetings of the Commission are scheduled for the 3rd Monday of Mar/Apr/May and Sept/Oct/Nov.
