fax: (860) 885-1160 SENIOR AFFAIRS COMMISSION Meeting of November 16, 2009 Members in Attendance: Vice Chairperson Olive Buddington, Secretary Margaret Aldrich, Regular Member Michael Lahan and Alternate Members Antoinette Gwiazdowski, Frank Jacaruso, and Jan Stewart. Attending staff members were Mike Wolak and Anne Barriere. Absent were Chairperson Gen Bergendahl, Regular Member Jacquelyn Randall, and staff member Beverly Goulet. Vice Chairperson Olive Buddington determined that a quorum was present and called the meeting to order at 9:01 a.m. Minutes: Accepted as submitted. Communications: Mike talked to Bob Maloff from Public Utilities and they have been trying to coordinate the efforts of installation and parking lot repair and he was told the windmill installation has been pushed back to next summer so the parking lots will not be repaired for this winter. Human Services Report: None. Senior Center Report: Our Annual Holiday Luncheon will be held on Dec 17th. We are trying a new caterer; Mathew’s Catering from Central Village. They do a lot of business for Backus and Mike has attended several events where they catered and found them very good. We are also holding our Annual “Day of Giving” on Dec 23rd from 10 a.m. until noon and will forward any collected cash, cans or non-perishable goods to the “Soup Kitchen” in Norwich. Our recent Craft Fair was a success with a profit of about $1,700. Dana has been working on a Murder Mystery Dinner Theater fundraiser at Ocean Beach for the spring and has already sold 300 spots. Being local, this event is very affordable for seniors and we hope to sell out. Our center will offer 30 spots and use our busses for transportation. The annual lunch at the local public schools has been canceled by the recommendation of the Senior Center’s Medical Director due to outbreak of H1N1 flu in the state.
