SENIOR AFFAIRS COMMISSION
Meeting of March 15, 2010
Members in Attendance: Chairperson Gen Bergendahl, Vice Chairperson Olive Buddington,
Secretary Margaret Aldrich, Regular Members Michael Lahan and Jacquelyn Randall, and
Alternate Members Antoinette Gwiazdowski, Frank Jacaruso, and Jan Stewart. Attending staff
members were Beverly Goulet, Mike Wolak and Anne Barriere. Absent was Regular Member
Michael Lahan
Chairperson Gen Bergendahl determined that a quorum was present and called the meeting to
order at 9:01 a.m.
Minutes: Accepted as submitted.
Communications: We received several Thank You cards from grateful seniors who used the
Med Ride II program (out-of-town medical-transportation) and from seniors who came to the
Valentine’s Day Cabaret.
Human Services Report: This year’s budget is a serious business. The City Manager will
release his proposed version at the Council Meeting on Monday, April 5th. The hearing for
Human Services will be on Thursday, April 8th at 8:30 p.m. at City Hall.
Each department was asked to submit a reduced budget of 5, 10, and 15% but our department
will be higher. We are planning a power-point presentation that will show the Council what the
cuts mean in specific services to the seniors and how vital these services are to this population.
Please make every attempt to attend this hearing.
Senior Center Report: We sold 220 tickets for the upcoming Corned Beef and Cabbage
Fundraiser which should show a profit of around $1,500 for the Senior Center. Dana’s “Murder
Mystery” trip at Ocean Beach in April, which should show a profit of $3,000. (150 tickets were
sold to February’s Valentine’s Day Cabaret.)
We’ve reapplied for three grants; one for the extra day per week for Natalie, the Outreach
Worker, the Podiatry Clinic and the Med Ride II (out-of-town medical transportation) program
with Montville.
Chairperson’s Report/Legislative Report: TVCCA meals are going very well, averaging
25-27, on Tuesdays anyway.
Other Business: None.
Old Business: None.
New Business: Jan commended Mike for his collaboration with Lu DePina on the brochure.
May 6th will be our Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon.
