fax: (860) 885-1160 SENIOR AFFAIRS COMMISSION Meeting of October 16, 2017 Members in Attendance: Regular members: Frank Jacaruso, Jr., P. Michael Lahan, Margaret Aldrich and Alternate member Janice Stewart and Laurieann Messore Attending staff members were Mike Wolak and Leeann Gomes Member P. Michael Lahan determined there was a quorum and called the meeting to order. Minutes: The minutes from 09-18-2017 were approved. Communications: Mike shared a thank you note from the daughter of one of our former members who passed away last year. She sent along a $500 donation to partially be used for seniors who may not be able to afford hairdressing services at the center. Human Services Report: Leeann stated she and her staff downtown have been consumed with moving over the last few weeks. There will be an open house for Human Services at City Hall on Wednesday, October 18t from 2-4pm and again at the Recreation/YFS Dept. on Friday, October 27th from 2-4 pm Friday, October 20th the NAACP is renting the Sr. Center to host their annual meeting. The rental should generate roughly $500 for the center. There was a political meet and greet held at the Sr. Center this past Friday which was attended by only 3 people. A discussion was held in terms of looking ahead to future meet and greet programs to be held during our normal business hours and maybe sponsored by our commission. The basketball fundraiser was well attended and there will be some discussion on how the money will be split amongst the HS department. Senior Center Report: Mike talked about our Sr. center Flu Clinic is on for October 25th from 9am until Noon. There was a drive thru flu clinic held here on Sunday hosted by Uncas Health District. We are having our Annual Holiday Luncheon on December 12th at noon. More information to come in our November newsletter. Chairperson’s Report/Legislative Report: None Old Business: There was a short discussion regarding membership dues and what other centers in our area do. Most are fee based for programs and some have membership fees. Many have both. New Business: Margaret Aldrich has chosen to not continue with the commission. Her term ended in September and she will not seek to renew. There was also discussion at this time regarding how the City has handled people that are currently on a commission and how the renewal process is handled. Next Meeting: Monday, November 20, 2017 at 9:00 a.m., at the Rose City Senior Center.
