NORWICH YOUTH & FAMILY SERVICES ADVISORY BOARD MEETING September 10th, 2013 ROOM 335, NORWICH CITY HALL (860) 823-3782 - FAX (860) 892-6031 Email: nyfs@cityofnorwich.org MINUTES The Norwich Youth and Family Services Advisory Board meeting was held on September 10th, 2013 in Room 335 in Norwich City Hall. Those in attendance were as follows: Kay Eyberse-Coordinator Jodi Vara-Norwich Free Academy, President Angela Rae Duhaime-Community Member Erin Wood-Community Member Officer Michael McKinney-NPD Members to be appointed: Jaime Miller, Norwich Tech Calla Tetreault, Youth Guest: Deb Kievits NPC: Tatum Sherwood Jennifer Rummel Excused: Laura Konieko Vouise Fonville The meeting was called to order at 8:30. The minutes from the minutes from the meeting on May 10h, were distributed and a vote will be held at a larger meeting. The group gave a warm welcome to two, to be approved members: Jaime Miller from Norwich Tech and Calla Tatro, a new youth rep. YBS Programs~ Kay reviewed all NYFS programs that ran through the summer, most notably : • Cool Directions/Summer Youth Employment – Extremely successful Summer Youth Employment Program this summer with excellent placements throughout the City and 122 youth gainfully employed. • Summer Jam and Learn Program – We had 6 great weeks of programming in collaboration with the BullyBusters, serving 16 at-risk youth with quality summer programming. Some highlights include: Spending the morning at Superior Court with the Judge and learning how the system works, Attending a Youth and Violence Forum  at City Hall and dialoging directly with Governor Dannel P. Malloy and, course ZIPLINING! New Business – Kay handed out and reviewed the Annual Report sent to the State Department of Education, including fiscal information and summary data. It showed a total budget of $578,905 of which approximately $88,000 is City dollars. NYFS served 323 unduplicated “Tier Two” clients during the year and over 12,000 potentially duplicated “Tier One” individuals. • Norwich Prevention Council Subcommittee- o The new LPC grant is due in October. The subcommittee discuss it’s priorities for the year and decided to, once again, attempt to work with Norwich youth and NPD to do compliance checks in local package stores. It has been never been done in Norwich by this Prevention Council. The subcommittee also agreed to do Marijuana Education trainings over the course of the year, continue with the Youth Impacted by Addiction Group, work with NFA SADD to continue to promote the prescription drug drop box and youth coffeehouse opportunities. o Erin W reported out on the 1st annual “Take the First Step”, the suicide prevention awareness walk was held at Mahan Field on June 15th and was very successful. It was followed up by a Q,P,R, training in July that was very well attended. The walk will happen again in 2014 and is part of an overall push to heighten awareness. o The Norwich Suicide Prevention Alliance Application is in and approved. They will be receiving $2500 after the team finishes it’s CONNECT Training in October. Next Board meeting will be November 12th 2013 from 8:30-10:00 am. Room 335 in City Hall All are welcome!
