Youth Service Advisory Board

Youth and Family Advisory Board Meeting August 21st, 2018 Time: 8:45 a.m. In Attendance Angelo Callis (NYFS), Steve Callender (Norwich PD), Tiana Powell (PFS), Pat McMahon (Community Member/Young Marines), Judith Post (Community Member). Old Business/Program Updates • JRB: Funds reduced by 25-30%. Tutoring will be open to all kids not just the diversion kids. • Summer Jam: Met for 6 weeks, 4 days a week, 6 hours a day. They worked on cognitive skills, went on field trips, Police Dept. spent time with them and they did volunteer work with the elderly and clean up. Overall a great group of kids. • Summer Youth Employment: 75 students were involved. It’s for low income students with low math scores. It gives them a summer long job opportunity. • Summer Leadership Programs: Erin and Jodi ran this from July to August. 27 kids total engaged with large group of the incoming freshman. New Business • 21st Century Grant: 4 years of funding. Tutoring will be through this instead of JRB. We’ll be taking in interns. • Fall 2018 Programming: New Principal at Kelly Middle School, we’ll be offering an SBIRT training to the staff. We will also be working with Reliance Health to hold a Parent Educational series for parents to learn how to spot drug using kids. • Family Day Sept. 16: At Mohegan Park from 11am-3pm. Norwich Prevention Council • Compliance Checks: 6 out of 9 sold to underage. TIPS training offered to all as a follow up by Christine. • Substance Abuse Prevention Class: Kids are referred from JRB and must complete 6 classes. We meet once a week for 45min and use a Substance Abuse curriculum that involves discussion, video and worksheets. • PFS Updates: 211/Reliance House Recovery Coach is up and running although they are looking for funding to continue past January. Announcements • DDR Dash 5k: October 27th at Mohegan Park. Halloween theme and partnering with a running club to get more runners. “Scaring Drugs Out of Town!” • Lip Sync Battle: Norwich Police is creating a Lip Sync Battle Video with our kids.
