Attendance
Present: Angelo Callis (NYFS), Pat McMahon (Community Member), Tiana Powell (PFS), Steve Callender (Norwich
PD, Sue dub (Uncas Health), Jodi Savage (NFA), Jaime Miller (Norwich Tech), Kerry Sisson (Joshua center).
Excused: Katelyn Wagner (Norwich Public Schools), Gail Palladino Marsh (Juvenile Probation), Deb Barber (DCF),
Judith Post (Community Member), Christine Goracy (NYFS).
Absent:
Review of October’s Meeting Minutes
• Accepted by consensus.
Old Business
• Board Members Month in Review:
o Sue: Uncas is working with Perception Program for a needle exchange to start in July. They will also
increase their Hep-C and HIV testing. Perceptions program has seen 35 people in Norwich since
January. Their goal is for users to use clean needles to spread any diseases.
• Juvenile Review Board: Steve reported that the JRB saw 16 kids last month. Majority are fights with other
kids, police or campus security. Christine has developed and will implement an anger management called
Health Choices as a diversion. They will meet for 8 weeks, once a week for an hour. Attendees must attend
school in Norwich or live in Norwich.
• Middle School Diversion: Tiana and intern Lexi have finished their girls group from Teachers called Voices.
Lexi will be leaving but Tiana will continue the group in the next school year. Andre has started up his boys
group with Kelly STEAM.
New Business
• Youth Service Award: They will be presented on May 3rd at City Hall in Norwich. We have 9 kids.
• World Youth Day: Also on Friday, May 3rd. We will be handing out lock boxes.
• Summer Jam & Learn: Angelo reported that we received our first donation of $2500 from Dime Bank. The
model is successful so we will keep it the same.
Norwich Prevention Council
• Vaping Compliance Checks: We will be putting this off until summer with SERAC.
• Suicide Prevention Walk: Walk is this Saturday, April 27th.
• Suicide Prevention Week: During that week they will have information table at sporting events, they will
have morning announcements for suicide prevention/awareness and they have a dress down day to
wear teal. Angelo will be doing Question Persuade Refer (QPR) trainings.
• Steered Straight: Michael DeLeon will be back to present to NFA students on May 16 and
parents/community members on May 15. The presentations will be on vaping and marijuana.
• SOR Grant: If granted we would like to purchase fentanyl testing strips. People using will be able to
test if their drug has fentanyl in it before using which could cause overdose/death.
