Youth Service Advisory Board

September 14, 2021 Time: 9 a.m. Attendance Present: Erin Haggan (NYFS), Bob Mckinney (Norwich PD), Jodi Savage (NFA), Kate Milde (NYFS), Jen Croce (UCFS) Excused: Katelyn Wagner (Norwich Public Schools), Jaime Miller (Norwich Tech), Kevin DiFilippo (DCF), Kim Charles (Juvenile Probation), Sue Dubb (Uncas Health District), Leopoldine Bertrand (Youth) Unexcused: Review of Motion to Accept July Meeting Minutes  Unable to do this due to low Board member attendance. Tabled to next meeting. Old Business  Board Members Updates: o Bob (NPD):  Discussed police focus on gun control and the increase in youth being in possession. Expanded on protocol for youth marijuana possession, discretion of PD to send first warning to JRB. Described warning citation and summons that PD will be using along with health form.  Has gone to the NYFL field to begin building rapport. He will be collaborating with NYFS to do a cell phone safety training with the youth at the field in the near future.  Working on leadership conference, with a focus on young males, to be held in October or November. Will have motivational speakers, life skills workshops etc. o Jodi (NFA):  She has begun connections for mentoring program with Norwich Public Schools.  Discussed projects that NFA Prevention Council is working on, including a podcast in collaboration with the NPD. o Jen (UCFS):  Provided a summary of Mobile Crisis and the work that they do. They are extremely understaffed. The calls that they are getting involved kids who are high risk. She also reported the UCFS Health Center is also understaffed. o Kate (NYFS):  Introduced herself to the group. She is the new NYFS Caseworker/Program Coordinator.  Discussed her previous collaborations with Three Rivers Community College and offered to use her relationships with members of the Three Rivers Foundation to help make connections for mentoring programs. o Erin (NYFS):  Discussed upcoming film series for Angst, LIKE, Upstanders & RACE.   Discussed upcoming programming, including grant funds for mentoring, parent education programs and positive youth development groups. New Business  Staff Changes/New Board Members o Kate was previously introduced as the new Caseworker/Program Coordinator for NYFS. o Jen Croce from UCFS will be joining the Board.  Change in Meeting Time: o Unable to do proceed due to low Board Member attendance. NYFS Coordinator will reach out to Board members not in attendance for feedback on this change. All Board members at the meeting were in agreement.  LPC Grant: o Signage for restaurant bathrooms identifying ways to get help for mental health/substance use o More ideas will be discussed at the NPC meeting scheduled on 9/21/21  New Ideas: o Carter’s Kits for Mobile Crisis Clinicians o Screening anti‐bullying film “The Upstanders” at NFA.
