CITY OF NORWICH ESTABLISHED 1659 CONNECTICUT NORWICH YOUTH & FAMILY SERVICES 75 Mohegan Road, Norwich, (860) 823-3782, Fax (860) 823-3793 Youth Advisory Board September 13, 2022, 3pm Youth & Family Services 75 Mohegan Road In Attendance: Erin Haggan (YFS), Kimberly Siefert-Charles (Waterford Juvenile Court) Hannah (Prevention Council), Kate Milde (Youth and Family) Mike Garcia (Norwich Tech.), Sue Dubb (Uncas Health District), Bob McKinney (Global SRO) Absent: Teairez Atunbi (DCF), Jon Turban (NPS), Cara-Lynn Turner (Community Member), Jen Croce (UCFS) Vacancies: Community Member (1), Youth Representative (1) 1. Old Business  Review & Approval of Minutes: Tabled due to there being no quorum  QPR trainings continue to take place, next one scheduled for 9/28 5-6pm at Otis Library  Excessive use of 211 – Schools continues to work on solutions  Finding more opportunities for meaningful connection between parents and children ongoing concern, YFS will be looking for more opportunities for family enrichment events. 2. New Business • Board Member Updates  The Board needs to elect Chair and Vice-Chair  One Community and one Youth Representative spot vacant, members will continue to spread the word to fill spots.  Bylaws provided to all members at the meeting. • Upcoming Events/Programs  NFA having a parent night with local services attending 9/15/22  Trunk or Treat @ the Senior Center 10/28  YFS going to middle schools for parent education on vaping (1 night Kelly and 1 night at Global),  Norwich Tech. has a family engagement room and looking into how it can be best utilized  Norwich Tech. organizing Winter concert, summer concert and parent night  Social media training will be conducted at NPS during coffee chats  2 Marijuana and 2 Vaping digital billboards are being created by NYFS, 1 standard billboard on Vaping and 1 on Marijuana  Piloting project at NFA 10-day suspension for vaping but if an education course completed at NYFS a 5-day suspension will be recommended, Virtual training goes to the parents on vaping  Multiple events provided throughout Norwich for vaccine through Uncas Health District  New legislation about lead levels for under the age of 6, Lead is a big issue in Norwich due to old homes  NYFS has a partnership with Otis Library to provide Hidden in Plain Site, QPR, Mental Health events  NYFS/Rec received grant to provide afterschool programming in 3 elementary, and 1 middle school.
