THOMAS J GARDNERBIO-2013
ThomasJasen Gardneris a returningstudent, who is majoringin Life Science
Communications at the University of Wisconsin-Madisonin the College of Agriculture
and Life Sciences. The retiredelectricianmadethe Dean’s List this fall and hopes to
maintainthe studyhabitsthat got him nominatedon the scrupulouslist.
By returning to a universityenvironment, Gardnerhopesto inspirethe diminishing
number of black studentsto study scienceand medicine. The disciplineand commitment
necessary to achieve a degree for a returning studentis the same as a high school senior.
Both the old man and the young man are adjustingto the rules and regulations of a new
environment.By working together on campus and throughout our lives we can achieve
King’s=dream of humansfor humanity.
The famous TuskegeepresidentBookerT. Washingtontold his great—grandmother that
former slaveswhom masteredtechnologywould be welcomedas post Civil War skilled
artisansand not asformerslaves of the Confederacy. FrederickDouglass advisedhis
greatrgreat-great grandfather that university educatedblackswould continuethe scientific
heritage of their ancestors andcontributeto the sciencediscoveriespredictedby our
nation’srevolutionaryforefathers.
As a Vietnam Veteran battle?eldmedic, Gardner is a life-long learnerwho believesthat
blackswith 21”‘century scientificknowledgewill eagerly be welcomedinto the new i
paradigmshift of cooperationbetweeninventive science and informedcommunities.
As the husbandof a medicaldoctor and the father of an environmentalresearcher,
Gardnerhas witnessedthe causalityassociation betweenhealth and environment.By
understandingthe importantrole betweenscienceand society, the generationallifestyle
of blacks can be redefineddespitethe negative detrimentsof social, physical, and
intellectualin?uences of their urban environment.
Gardner believesthat story telling sciencewritingwill help bridgethe gap betweenthose
who are well informed about the contributionsof science, and thosewho rely on less then
adequate resources of misinformation.
The contributivehistoryof medicalresearchersusing black humanguinea pigs is
evidencefor self-reliance.Unless blacks learn to researchand inventdiscoveriesthat help
all Americans;blackswill not be able to contributeto the untappedmedicaldiscoveries
that helped to save African—American lives and lifestylesdespiteracist barriers. These
discoveries,whiledeniedby revisionists,helpedAmericato becomethe greatest nation
on earth.
