1. CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 5:58 p.m.
1.A ROLL CALL
Present: 10 - Chair Trent Hart, Co-Chair Erin McGown, Commissioner Diana
Fairbanks, Commissioner Stacy Hicks, Commissioner Ron Hinton,
Commissioner Marygrace Jennings, Commissioner Katie Nelson,
Commissioner Michael Olson, Commissioner Rick Perry, and
Commissioner Danielle Westbrook
2. APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Trent asked if there were changes to the Agenda. Hearing none, the agenda
was approved.
3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
14-0457 Approval of April 10 Arts Commission Meeting Minutes
Commissioner Hinton asked to be removed from the roll call of the April 10 meeting
minutes, as he had not attended the meeting.
The minutes were approved as amended.
4. PUBLIC COMMENT - None
5. ANNOUNCEMENTS
Commissioners shared information on past and upcoming art events. Commissioner
Hicks had The Olympia Center Public Art Assessment binder taken from her vehicle;
a new one will be made up. Commissioner McGown will be resigning her position in
August to attend graduate school.
6. BUSINESS ITEMS
14-0337 Referral from Finance Committee
Commissioners weighed the three options for the 1% for Art Funds for City Hall as

presented in the staff report.
A sub-committee agreed to meet to scope out steps for responding to the referral and
moving forward on a Municipal Art Plan given 1% for Art projects coming up in
addition to those the Commission wishes to pursue. This committee will report back
to the Commission at the June 12 meeting.
The discussion was continued to the June 12 Arts Commission meeting.
14-0463 Percival Plinth Project Recommendation 2014
The jury recommendation of thirteen sculptures and one alternative for the 2014/15
Plinth Project was shared with Commissioners. Commissioner Perry moved,
seconded by Commissioner Nelson, to approve the recommendation. The
Commission recommendation will go to Council on May 20.
The recommendation was approved and referred.to the City Council due
back on 5/20/2014
7. REPORTS
14-0458 Commission Items
1.1 Survey of Economic Value of Olympia's Music Industry - No report.
1.9 Define Theater District - No report.
1.13 Comprehensive and Action Plan Update - Expected completion in June.
Stephanie shared the Parks, Arts and Recreation Plan Process, with a projected
completion date of summer 2015.
1.14 Commission Retreat/Work Session - No report.
2.c Public Art Assessment - Some condition report binders are turned in with a few
more to follow.
The report was received.
14-0459 Community Events & Outreach Committee Report
1.3 Community Art Process Review - No report.
1.4 Artspace/Arts Center Support - Trent, Ron Danielle and Diana joined Council
Members and City Staff on a tour of some established Artspace facilities in Everett
and South Seattle. The field trip was an educational opportunity in advance of a
Council Study Session April 22.
1.6 Guidelines for Temporary Display of Art at City Hall - To combine with Workplan
Item 1.15, Community Arts Roundtable.
1.8 Music Out Loud - Commissioners are preparing for a meeting with General
Government on May 20.
1.11 Studio Tour- No report.
1.12 Music in Neighborhood Parks - No report.
1.15 Community Arts Roundtable- To combine with Workplan Item 1.6, Guidelines for
Temporary Display of Art at City Hall.

2.a Arts Walk 48 & 49- Evaluations are coming in.
2.b Art Ambassador Program- Training set for May 24 at 10:00 a.m. at The Olympia
Center.
2.d Arts Day at the Capitol - No report.
2.g Area Arts Promotion - No report.

14-0460 Art in Public Places Committee Report
1.2 Municipal Art Plan to City Council - No report.
1.5 Utility Box Mural Project- Commissioner Perry is ready to form a sub-committee.
Commissioners, McGowen, Fairbanks and Hart volunteered.
1.7 City Hall 1% for Public Art - No report.
1.10 City Entry Signs - No report.
2.e Percival Plinth Peoples' Choice award - No report.
2.f Public Art Projects- The pedestal to house the Peoples Choice winner for City Hall
can not be made from concrete as originally planned. Currently under time restraints,
it is proposed a steel box (welded and painted ) replace the original design.
Commissioner Hart will review the plan and provide feedback to staff.
Also another wall was added to the Westbay Sidewalk project, so the artist has been
brought back to address the new wall similar to the others.
The report was received.

The meeting adjourned at 8:07 p.m.
