CALL TO ORDER Vice Chair Beckner called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. 2. ROLL CALL Guest: Mayor Buxbaum Present: 9- Chair Holly Davies, Vice Chair Chrisanne Beckner, Commissioner Mary Coacher, Commissioner Dwayne Harkness, Commissioner Luke Howard, Commissioner Ian Macek, Commissioner Garner Miller, Commissioner Rachel Newmann, and Commissioner Deborah J Ross Excused: 1 - Commissioner Mark Rentfrow 3. APPROVAL OF AGENDA The agenda was approved by consensus. 4. APPROVAL OF MINUTES 4.A 13-0309 Approval of March 27, 2013 Meeting Minutes It was noted that David Kindle's last name was omitted. Vice Chair Beckner moved, seconded by Commissioner Newmann, to approve the minutes as amended. The motion carried by unanimous vote. 5. PUBLIC COMMENT - None 6. ANNOUNCEMENTS - None 7. REPORTS 7a. Alley Committee Mayor Buxbaum and Commissioners discussed the Heritage Commission plan to name an alley after the late Roger Easton. The Mayor expressed his preference to keep all alley names consistant with Mr. Easton's theme of steam ships and said something more City of Olympia Page 1 Heritage Commission Meeting Minutes April 24, 2013 substantial should be named for Mr. Easton. He asked Commissioners to suggest other places that could be named for Mr. Easton and to follow a formal process for naming property. The Commissioners agreed to name alleys only after steam ships. Mayor Buxbaum suggested a naming ceremony to be in conjunction with an event at the library to highlight the historic steamships. 7b. Maintenance Committee Commissioners said they are looking for projects and have identified volunteers to help with maintenance work. 7c. Downtown Committee The Committee has not met since the last Heritage Commission meeting, but Commissioner Newmann spoke with someone at the City of Missoula, MT about their Code update for their historic downtown. She also attended a recent meeting of the Coalition of Neighborhood Associations, who is working on background for a downtown master plan update. 7d. Heritage Review No reviews since the last meeting. There is an upcoming review of a Heritage Register application. 7e. Outreach/Mapping Commissioners said they are prepared for the May 18-19 events for National Preservation Month and described the planned events. 7f. Youth Education Commissioner Coacher said she contacted a local teacher and Hands on Children's Museum about her project ideas to introduce historic preservation to kids. 8. OTHER TOPICS 8.A 13-0308 Heritage Preservation Award Nominations Commissioners discussed the nominations for the preservation awards, which were: 1. Deb Ross and Brian Hovis for their work on the "Where are We?" website. 2. Walker John for his rehabilitation/remodel of the Cunningham buildings. 3. Chrisanne Beckner for her work on the historic inventory and alley project. Vice Chair Beckner declined the nomination. The Commissioners agreed by consensus to give awards to Deb Ross and Brian Hovis, and to Walker John. City of Olympia Page 2 Heritage Commission Meeting Minutes April 24, 2013 9.
