CALL TO ORDER Co-Chair Chan called the meeting to order at 6:08 p.m. 1.A ROLL CALL Present: 6 - Co-Chair Genevieve Chan, Commissioner Parfait Bassale, Commissioner Fauziya Mohamedali, Commissioner Wesley Nguyen, Commissioner Jessicarae Nunez and Commissioner Marianne Ozmun-Wells Excused: 4 - Co-Chair Sarah Lloyd, Commissioner Rachelle Martin, Commissioner Omar Santana-Gomez and Commissioner Larry Watkinson 2. APPROVAL OF AGENDA The agenda was approved. 3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES - None 4. ANNOUNCEMENTS Staff made announcements. 5. BUSINESS ITEMS 5.A 23-0090 Discussion with the Police Auditor on the 2021 Annual Report and Future Commission Engagement Police Auditor Tara Parker presented the 2021 report and shared the process for reviewing complaint and use-of-force incidents. City Council asked the Social Justice and Equity Commission to serve as oversight for the Police. The Police auditor will continue until a final oversight model is adopted. There was discussion about use-of-force incidents involving people who appeared to be mentally ill and/or severely intoxicated, how demographics are collected and police operations in general. City of Olympia Page 1 Social Justice & Equity Commission Meeting Minutes January 23, 2023 5.B 23-0099 Discuss new Commissioner Applications Criteria and Process Staff noted the City received nine applications for the two open seats and recommended the Commission empower the co-chairs to review applications and make a recommendation to the Community Livability and Public Safety Committee. The discussion was completed. 6. REPORTS Staff reported on the Discrimination Assessment Request for Proposal process timeline and next steps. City Council asked the Commission to make a recommendation on how to improve the Lodging Tax application and selection criteria. 7. OTHER TOPICS - None 8.
