MEETING MINUTES Oregon Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee January 5, 2023 1) Call to Order. Dan Dick called meeting to order at 6:32 2) Roll Call a. Present: Dan, Dick Lori Anderson, Rachel Wagabaza, Carlene Bechen, Alice Egan b. Absent: Alyssa Pillar-Kellman 3) Approval of November 10, 2022 DEI Committee meeting minutes a. Approved by group consensus 4) Business (Items are for discussion and / or potential action). a. Reading to focus Committee’s attention on work. i. Dan Dick shared The Bengsons Hope Comes video, discussed hope as an action. b. Discuss and draft a Village of Oregon DEI statement and policy i. Draft was discussed in November, but with month off it is necessary to return to it. ii. Carlene Bechen brought samples from 1. Greendale, WI 2. Discussion about whether a statement should be from this committee or from the board? 1. Group consensus about writing a statement for this committee, and perhaps further supporting the Village Board in creating their own in the future. 2. Decision made to use statement from Town of Weston as a template or starting point. Committee will look at this in the next two weeks and send feedback so that a draft can be created before next meeting. c. Discuss ideas to submit to the Public Arts Committee to highlight diversity, equity, and inclusion in the community. i. Carlene B did hear from Randy G that the village is open to ideas, such as the banners on lamp posts. ii. Collaboration with City of Eau Claire. Could be murals, sculptures, other types of art. iii. Currently very little public art, none with a DEI focus iv. Idea about a type of public land acknowledgement/memorial/etc. acknowledging indigenous peoples who resided on this land prior to other settlers. 1. Should be a Native American artist if this is an option is chosen v. Carlene B will ask Randy G if there is a protocol for taking suggestions d. Report on Village responses to DEI Committee. i. Village read the statement on the officer-involved shooting but opted not to vote on it e. Student member position vacancy on Village website. i. Posted on website, does not need to be a student. ii. Could encourage folks who applied before to re-apply iii. Question about where position is posted, can only be on social media that the village controls/moderates f. Other:  i. Nehemiah-Harry/Karen, have been sent list of community employees and community members for interviews, no further information at this time. ii. Action Item: By January 19th, committee members should send Dan Dick edits for DEI statement to put together in a draft statement for consideration at next meeting (2/2/23) iii.
