Stat. § 19.84, notice is hereby given to the public by the Village President, that the following meeting will be held: Meeting: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) Committee Date: Thursday, June 1, 2023 Location: Fireside Room, People’s UMC, 103 N. Alpine Pkwy Time: 6:30 PM Note: Any person who has a qualifying disability as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act that requires the meeting or materials at the meeting to be in an accessible location or format must contact the Village Clerk at (608) 835-3118, 101 Alpine Parkway, Oregon, Wisconsin, at least twenty-four (24) hours prior to the commencement of the meeting so that any necessary arrangements can be made to accommodate each request. MEETING MINUTES 1. Call to Order. The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. 2. Roll Call. Members present: Lori Anderson, Carlene Bechen, Dan Dick, Alyssa Pillar-Kellman, Rachel Wagabaza. 3. Approval of March 30, 2023, DEI Committee meeting minutes a. Meeting minutes were approved. 4. Business (Items are for discussion and / or potential action). a) Reading to focus Committee’s attention on work. b) Discussion on facilitator experience for the Black History for a New Day course. Members of the DEI Committee who served as facilitators for the Black History for a New Day course shared their overall experience and general impressions of how the course material was received. i) Discuss next steps for Village Staff, Elected Officials, and Committee/Board members. Dr. Karen Reece, Vice President of Research and Outreach with Nehemiah Center for Urban Leadership Development, met via Zoom with DEI Committee members to discuss next steps for the training. Members of the DEI Committee have reviewed and edited the assessment survey. The survey will be sent out to all Village Staff, Board Trustees, Library Board Members, Members of Village Committees, and the Oregon Police Department. In general, Karen recommends giving respondents about a month to complete the survey. Results will be compiled into a report and presented to the Village Board. The results are public record and many communities publicize them via press release to inform the community. Based on the results of the survey, Nehemiah will design training modules for the Approved 07/06/2023 Village. This training will be focused on administrative staff, department heads and key staff members, elected officials and board/committee members. The ideal size and timing for the training is 20-25 people for two hours monthly. c) Discuss issuing a response to Speaker Vos’s call for University of Wisconsin System to eliminate diversity offices. i) Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article: GOP Speaker Vos urges University of Wisconsin System to eliminate campus diversity offices. Kelly Meyerhofer, May 3, 2023 (article provided in packet of information). DEI Committee members agreed that we are appalled and concerned about the Wisconsin State Legislature’s threat to cut $32 million from the UW System budget that will force them to eliminate campus DEI programs and positions. Dan Dick volunteered to draft a statement for committee members to review. d) Role of DEI Committee in reviewing Village policies and ordinances. The members expressed their interest and support in reviewing Village policies and ordinances and will prioritize them further at the next meeting. e) Discuss potential new members for DEI committee. The members are excited about the possibility of Luis Loya joining the committee and look forward to the Village Board confirming him at their next meeting. f) Other matters for discussion and future agenda items. For the next meeting members will listen to the ‘Hear Me Out’ podcast about the effectiveness of DEI training.
