Pursuant to Wis. Stat. § 19.84, notice is hereby given to the public that the following meeting will be held:
Meeting: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) Committee Date: Thursday, April 4, 2024
Location: Fireside Room, People’s United Methodist Church Time: 6:30 PM

Note: Any person who has a qualifying disability as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act that requires

MEETING MINUTES
1) Call to Order.
The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m.
2) Roll Call.
Present: Sedona Afeworki, Lori Anderson, Carlene Bechen (Village Board member), and Liina-
Ly Roos
Absent: Dan Dick, Luis Loya, & Karen Ramirez
3) Approval of February 6, 2024 Committee meeting minutes.
The meeting minutes for February 6, 2024 were approved. There was some discussion to provide
context and explanation to Liina and Sedona the presentation from Martin Shanks made to the DEI
Committee in January.
4) Business (items are for discussion and / or potential action).
a) Reading to focus Committee’s attention on work.

b) Discuss ways to create community gathering opportunities and discussions for individuals
to share diverse perspectives (see meeting minutes from January 9th and February 6th,
2024 provided in the packet of information).
1. Presentation from Dan Dick regarding a facilitation process and examples of how
to hold community gatherings and discussions.
Dan Dick provided a proposal related to a community conversation of ‘Banned
Books in Wisconsin’. The committee discussed ideas and ways to attract and
invite community members to such discussions. They remain hopeful that this will
be the first of many community conversations about pertinent topics. They
discussed potential dates and decided that Tuesday, June 11, 2024 from 6:30 p.m.
– 8:30 p.m. at the Oregon Public Library may be their first conversation/discussion.
Final dates and times will be discussed at a future meeting.

Members are encouraged to think about the questions discussed and to report back
at the next meeting.
• How do we attract/invite a cross-section of parents, teachers, students, and
community members with varied opinions?
• What is the best way to share ‘Community Conversation’ with the
community?

2. Discuss potential groups to invite to gatherings and / or topics that could be
discussed in future gatherings.
The members would like to talk about the School Resource Officer (SRO) Program
during a future community discussion / conversation.
c) Discuss training opportunities and ideas for Village Staff and Oregon Police Department
Staff regarding communicating with people with disabilities and mental health illnesses.
Bechen reported she will contact and discuss the training needs with Village Administrator
Martin Shanks. She also reported she would contact Disability Rights Wisconsin about
potential training opportunities.
d) Future agenda items
The members would like to learn more about a “Community Climate Survey” as it relates to
diversity, equity, and inclusion in the community. Bechen reported that she will reach out to
Nehemiah Community Development Corporation to see if they can attend the meeting in July
to discuss this further and to see if they have ideas on how to conduct and share such survey.
The members would like to conduct the survey in Fall 2024.
5) Adjournment.
The committee adjourned at approximately 7:30 p.m.
