Stat. § 19.84, notice is hereby given to the public that the following meeting will be held: Meeting: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) Committee Date: Thursday, May 2, 2024 Location: Fireside Room, People’s United Methodist Church Time: 6:30 PM f Note: Any person who has a qualifying disability as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act that requires the meeting or materials at the meeting to be in an accessible location or format must contact the Village Clerk at (608) 835-3118, 101 Alpine Parkway, Oregon, Wisconsin, at least twenty-four (24) hours prior to the commencement of the meeting so that any necessary arrangements can be made to accommodate each request. MEETING MINUTES 1) Call to Order. The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. 2) Roll Call. Present: Sedona Afeworki, Lori Anderson, Carlene Bechen (Village Board member), Dan Dick, Karen Ramirez, and Liina-Ly Roos Absent: Luis Loya 3) Approval of April 4, 2024 Committee meeting minutes. The meeting minutes approved with no changes. 4) Business (items are for discussion and / or potential action). a) Reading to focus Committee’s attention on work. Push yourself to be a learner all day long. Take care of each other. Take risks. Be inclusive. Trust the power of collaboration. Make time for reflection Be mindful of your compassionate acts toward each – take the time to express gratitude and serve. b) Report on discussions with Oregon School District and Oregon Public Library regarding having a “banned books” conversation. a. OSD & Oregon Public Library not ready to take this on. Need more time for planning and consideration of how to handle the conversation to prevent a possibly difficult situation. Page 1 of 2 Approved 06/06/2024 c) Continue discussion on ways to create community gathering opportunities and discussions for individuals to share diverse perspectives. Different topic idea - “What does it mean to maintain a small town feel?” i. Plan for a fall date ii. Marketing Strategy 1. Panther Vision (OSD) 2. Posters 3. Social media 4. Oregon Observer 5. Website iii. Develop questions - safe to more sensitive 1. Perhaps solicit questions from community 2. Google form for students/community members to give input/submit questions iv. Carlene will discuss with Martin and present idea to the Village Board. d) Continue discussion on training opportunities and ideas for Village Staff and Oregon Police Department Staff regarding communicating with people with disabilities and mental health illnesses. Carlene and Dan will continue to reach out. e) Discuss potential “Community Climate Survey” as it relates to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the community. Shawna Lutzow & Karen Reece were not available tonight. Members of the Committee will meet with them via Zoom on Tuesday, May 14 at 4:45PM. Send questions to Carlene to share with Shawna & Karen in advance. 5) Future agenda items. Continue planning ‘community conversation’ 6) Adjournment.
