Minutes  May  2014  RPL  Advisory  board  meeting     Directors  present:  John  Phillips,  Wilson  Rankin,  Alaa  Ragab,  Annyce  Levy,  Sonya   Nicely,  Bruce  Van  Arsdale   Staff  present:  Toni  Cox     Bruce  called  the  meeting  to  order.  Minutes  from  November  2013  were  approved.   Offices  remained  the  same.  There  was  discussion  about  terms  that  expired  next.   Everyone  elected  to  remain  on  the  board.     Toni  reported  that  the  library  received  the  Best  Young  Adult  Program  Award  from   the  recent  meeting  of  the  Virginia  Public  Library  Directors.  This  program  was  a  teen   lock  in  held  at  the  library  during  the  summer  reading  program.  Dave  Banker   organized  it.     New  staff  members  Dagmar  Weschke  and  Haley  Baker  were  hired  as  part  time   clerks.  Dagmar  will  work  in  the  local  history  room  and  Haley  will  be  circulation.   Both  are  public  service.  Hannah  Pierce  was  offered  the  position  of  Youth  Services   librarian  and  has  accepted.  She  begins  work  in  June.       The  library  staff  is  working  to  increase  adult  programming  and  there  are  several   events  coming  up—self-­‐publishing,  health  lecture  series  and  concerts.  The  staff  has   been  working  on  preparing  for  the  literary  festival  to  be  held  on  the  grounds  of   Glencoe.    The  event  is  Saturday,  July  12  from  10  to  5.     Donations  for  the  children’s  department  have  paid  for  the  artwork  completed  and   installed  by  Kathryn  Smith  and  Carolee  Bondurant.  Puzzles  and  learning  games  will   be  replaced  with  the  remaining  funds.     National  Library  Week  was  celebrated  at  the  library  as  well  as  Snapshot  day  and  the   signing  of  the  Declaration  of  the  right  to  libraries.     Certificates  recognizing  the  work  of  Lamplighters  Flo  Graham  and  Mary  Susan   Vehorn  were  signed  and  will  be  given  to  them.       The  state  budget  was  not  final,  but  state  aid  for  the  upcoming  year  is  currently  set  at   $141,958.     There  was  general  discussion  about  the  number  of  accidents  in  the  parking  lot  and   what  could  be  done  to  encourage  drivers  to  use  caution.     Next  meeting  will  be  August  4  at  5:00.
