ROME CITY COMMISSION SPECIAL CALLED MEETING Thursday, July 18, 2024 The Rome City Commission met at 10:00 a.m. this date for a Special Called Meeting in the City Commission Chambers of City Hall, 601 Broad Street. Mayor McDaniel presided with Mayor Pro Tem Bojo and Commissioners Brock, Cochran, Beeman, Doss, Quick, and Collins present. Commissioner Robinson was absent and excused. Mayor McDaniel opened the meeting with prayer and led in the salute to the flag. 2024 Tax Increase – Public Hearing #2 City Manager Rich announced that the Finance Committee has recommended a total City of Rome Millage rate for 2024, 26.25 mills. This total includes a .05 mill reduction in the City M & O and a .05 mill reduction in the City Capital line items. Rome School Board mill rate will decrease .10 mills. This will equal a total City reduction of .20 mills for 2024. Since this mill rate reduction is less than the rollback rate, the tax increase public hearings are being held. Mr. Rich stated that a home in the City of Rome valued at $150,000 would realize a $12.00 reduction in the 2024 City tax bill provided the assessment has not increased. Mayor McDaniel called a public hearing to order concerning the tax mill rate. Speaking in opposition to the proposed millage rate was Ms. Carolyn Copeland, 107 Woodcrest Drive. Ms. Copeland stated that she is the spokesperson for her neighborhood. She described her neighborhood as being a combination of young families and retirees and noted that, with inflation and the related price increases, citizens are having a hard time with their finances. Home prices are up substantially, along with interest rates and tax assessments. She encouraged the City Commission to strive for increased tax mill rate reductions. There was no one else to speak regarding the proposed millage rate and the public hearing was closed.
