(Corn/Jennings) BACKGROUND: Initiated by: Juanita Jennings New Mexico Military Institute applied to the city through a Lodgers’ Tax Funding Request for the Wool Bowl. The Wool Bowl was played annually from 1966 to 1981, and is being restarted as one of five junior college football bowl games in the country. The game will be played Dec. 3 at the Wool Bowl, with two teams to be determined arriving in Roswell Dec. 1. Organizers estimate traveling parties playing in the game to be between 400 and 500, and spectators between 2,000 and 4,000. The applicant identified $4,660 in eligible expenses for reimbursement at a 50% rate. FINANCIAL CONSIDERATION: Up to $2,000 at 50% of eligible expenses through Lodgers’ Tax Fund Special Events. BOARD AND COMMITTEE ACTION: The Occupancy Tax Board voted 3-0 May 24, 2022 to recommend funding the Wool Bowl for up to $2,000 at a 50% reimbursement basis of eligible expenses. (Corn/Jennings) BACKGROUND: Initiated by: Juanita Jennings Pecos Valley Jazz and Arts Festival, Inc. applied to the city through a Lodgers’ Tax Funding Request for the 15th annual Roswell Jazz Festival. The festival is scheduled for Oct. 12-16 at various Roswell locations, and includes educational seminars and outreach to school music programs and students. The event did not take place in 2020 or 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2019 festival attendance was 2,742, with 87 documented participants from out of town. Organizers estimate 156 room nights will be booked between musicians and ticket-holders. City Council approved a $4,500 award in 2019. The applicant identified $7,467 in eligible expenses for reimbursement at a 50% rate. FINANCIAL CONSIDERATION: Up to $1,500 at 50% of eligible expenses through Lodgers’ Tax Fund Special Events. (Corn/Jennings) BACKGROUND: Initiated by: Juanita Jennings The Eastern New Mexico State Fair applied to the city through a Lodgers’ Tax Funding Request for the Eastern New Mexico State Fair, scheduled for Oct. 3-8. The six-day fair allows families from all 33 New Mexico counties to showcase their yearly agriculture projects. The fair also includes a parade, musical concerts and a carnival. Organizers estimate 650 room nights will be booked in connection to the fair. City Council approved awards of $44,250 in 2016, $36,570 in 2017, $36,750 in 2018 and $40,000 in 2019. The applicant identified $144,457.25 in eligible expenses for reimbursement at a 50% rate. FINANCIAL CONSIDERATION: Up to $36,500 at 50% of eligible expenses through Lodgers’ Tax Fund Special Events. (Corn/Jennings) BACKGROUND: Initiated by: Juanita Jennings The Bottomless Triathlon consists of swimming, bicycling and running July 9 at Bottomless Lakes State Park. Organizers estimated 120 room nights booked during the 2019 event, and anticipate at least 40 room nights this year. Of the 150 registrants, at least 129 reside more than 30 miles from Roswell. City Council approved a $2,480 award for the event in 2019. The applicant identified $6,400 in eligible expenses for reimbursement at a 50% rate. (Corn/Jennings) BACKGROUND: Initiated by: Juanita Jennings The Roswell Symphony Orchestra will hold concerts Oct. 28, Oct. 29 and Dec. 18 at New Mexico Military Institute’s Pearson Auditorium. The organization anticipates 500 to 700 people attending each concert and 175 room nights booked. The applicant identified $8,860 in eligible expenses for reimbursement at a 50% rate. FINANCIAL CONSIDERATION: Up to $2,200 at 50% of eligible expenses through Lodgers’ Tax Fund Special Events. LEGAL REVIEW: Not applicable.
