CITY OF ROSWELL – COMMISSION ON AGING 1105 Kachina Dr., Roswell, NM 88201 Councilor: Dusty Huckabee Commissioners: Commissioners: Morgan Nelson Julie Adams Charlie Phillips, Recorder Tom Dunlap, Vice Chair Cindy Willard Bob McCrea Lynne Ybarra, Chair Bonnie Montgomery Micki Peters, Ex Officio John Taylor, Ex Officio MINUTES February 20, 2013 Chairperson Lynne Ybarra called the meeting to order at 3:10 PM at the Wildewood Apartments community room. Commissioners present were: Julie Adams, Tom Dunlap, Morgan Nelson, Bob McCrea, Lynne Ybarra and City Councilor Dusty Huckabee. John Taylor was present representing veterans’ interests. Lynne welcomed the nine community members present. Approval of Minutes: Minutes of the January 16th meeting were unanimously approved with Tom Dunlap making the motion and Julie Adams seconding it. New Business: Lloyd Scarrow from Lovelace was unable to attend the Commission meeting. Tina Sanchez, RN, the SENM Ombudsman Regional Coordinator, gave a presentation on the Ombudsman program. This program only has authority to work with nursing homes and assisted living facilities. They have no authorization to advocate for residents of senior housing facilities such as Wildewood. Volunteer ombudsmen are always needed; there is a specific training program in place. Tom Dunlap moved that a letter be sent to the interim head of Aging and Long Term Services requesting a joint memorial to study instituting an Ombudsman program for senior, residential facilities. Julie Adams seconded the motion; it passed unanimously. John Taylor reported that the local VA Conference had local input and information but that there was no new or promising input from the state VA. Chaves County vets shall continue to pursue local medical care in compliance with existing VA regulations. Old Business: Tom Dunlap reported there hasn’t been any further communication from New Mexico/Texas Coaches regarding scheduled van transportation to Albuquerque. Community Comments: Joyce Shutt shared with the Commission her recent experience of a new telephone scam trying to get personal banking information so she could supposedly get a new social security card. She alerted the appropriate authorities. Tom Tartar shared some concerns he had a resident of Wildewood. Coordinator, Kelly Leflar, responded. Program: Refer to New Business. Committee Reports: None Commissioner’s Comments: Commissioner John Taylor informed us that that Mission Arch Care Facility had been sold to the Genesis Health Care Inc.
