Library Usage For the month of July, 21,370 visitors came through the Library’s doors. Of those thousands of visitors, 266 people signed up for new Library accounts and 665 people renewed their cards. There were 21,851 items that circulated in the month. The Library’s free public internet computers and wireless internet access continues to be a draw for some. The public access computers were accessed 4,450 times. The public Ethernet ports were used 50 times and the wireless internet was accessed 4,450 times. Summer Reading Program The Summer Reading Program (SRP) is one of the busiest times of the year at the Library. The Summer Reading Program is a collaborative effort with libraries around the nation. The Collaborative Summer Library Program is an organization that helps coordinate promotions, themes, ideas, and resources to participating libraries in order to put on a successful program. It is an all-ages program to help promote literacy for school aged children, but done in a way to include every member of the household. One of the goals of the program is for school aged children to continue to read through the summer so there is not a drop off in reading or learning levels once the school year starts again. The theme for this year’s program was “Build a Better World.” Prizes are used as incentives for patrons to participate. This year the Library took on a different format: for every 5 hours a person read, they got to choose a prize depending on a 3 tiered level for every 5 hours read. Once participants reached 20 hours they were entered into a grand prize drawing that was divided by age levels and were eligible to receive a “Build a Better World” Summer Reading t-shirt. 2 This year there was a 13% increase in people that signed up for the program with 1,372 people that registered in 2017 compared to 1,215 in 2016. There was also a 13% increase in numbers of people reading increasing to 751 people in 2017 as opposed to 666 in 2016. The total number of hours read by all 2017 participants was 21,459, a slight decrease from the 2016 number of 21,461. Summer Programs The Library provides story times for children throughout the year. Every Wednesday at 10 AM and 3:30 PM and also on Saturday at 2 PM a different themed story is read to children by the Children’s Department. During the Summer Reading Program, performers are brought in during June and July to help in celebrating the occasion. This year we had magicians, scientists, musicians, puppeteers, archaeologists, the Roswell Fire and Police Departments, and more stop by for these special story times. In addition to these special story times, a Tween craft was held every Thursday during these summer months and a Teen craft was held each month. Adult programs were also held with the Between the Lines Adult Coloring group that meets the first Tuesday of every month. There was also an author visit by Doug Thompson who talked about his book “Underground Ranger” that detailed some of his experiences working at the Carlsbad Caverns National Park. June had 21 programs held with a combined attendance of 984 people. July had a total of 20 programs with a total attendance of 1,143 people. These numbers are higher than normal since there are more programs during the summer in addition to some families having more free time away from school or other school year related activities. Upcoming Events In September, there will be an author visit from Jennifer Tucker and Rutherford Rankin co-authors of the mystery thriller book “Irreparable.” The event will be on September 2nd at 2 PM in the Library Bondurant Room. There will be books for purchase and the authors will be available to sign books after the event. September is also National Deaf Awareness Month and the Library will be recognizing this month with 5 special all-ages workshops every Saturday of September at 3:30 PM. The workshops will be featured on each of the five senses. 3 CITY OF ROSWELL General Services Committee City Hall Conference Room 425 N. Richardson, Roswell, NM 88202 Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at 3:30 p.m. ACTION REQUESTED: Special Events and Film Policy BACKGROUND: Staff have been working to create a cohesive and more manageable process for reviewing, approving, and supporting special events held within the City. This change in process is meant to improve the experience of the event holder as well as staff and, hopefully, lead to improved events within the City. In order to support the change in process, a guiding policy is needed. This policy has been reviewed by General Services as well as Finance Committee. The changes incorporated into the draft document are reflective of these reviews. Finance Committee will also review this draft at their next meeting. FINANCIAL CONSIDERATION: A fee schedule for City services is included in this policy. Each event will have fees assessed depending on their needs and requests. The goal with this policy is also to lessen the burden on the City financially in support of many of these events so that basic City services can be funded more appropriately.
