Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes 1/28/2013 Commission members present: Bob Edwards James Edwards Mike Drager Jim Waldrop Mandy Owens Staff Present: Laurie Jerge Damian Cheatem Other guests present: Dusty Huckabee Frank Willis Jared Kuluki The Parks & Recreation Commission meeting was called to order at 6:05 pm by Bob Edwards. James Edwards motioned to approve agenda and Mandy Owens seconded the motion. All were in favor. There were no corrections to the 10/29/2012 minutes. Mandy Owens motioned to approve the minutes and all were in favor. Frank Willis from Vantage Engineering gave an update on the construction project. Bad weather put them back about 3 weeks, however, he estimates the project being complete late March early April. If wind acts up there may be more delays. All material is in, steel is on the ground. Bob Edwards asked if the construction will be complete by the end of April for the field to be ready for the tournament. Frank Willis states that it will be done more likely the first of April. Damian Cheatem adds that the league are willing to play on the field as it is until the complex is complete. James Edwards expresses his concern not to rush the contractor to eliminate any mistakes and to take time and get the work done correctly. He feels that the leagues should push dates back. Damian said the problem with pushing dates back is that you have to get 2 leagues done by August. Bob Edwards asked if there is another field that the leagues can play on. Light poles and fence are almost complete. James Edwards suggested that the south and east end of Stiles Field parking lot be closed off and have the rest of the field closed in to help keep the field clean. They will begin cleaning up the field and concession next month. Elaine estimates the fence will cost about $15 per foot for a 6 ft. fence. James Edwards suggested Mark Cole for Commission seat. Bob asks that if anyone has any other suggestions to please call him. Mandy Owens would like to have the Sunken Garden grand opening sometime in April. Dusty Huckabee thinks it would be good to do it when the Iris Club sale is going on. There were no commission reports and no staff reports. Dusty would like to help the Boys & Girls Club. They aren’t going to have a swimming pool again this year. Bob Edwards states that they use to give them money to help out however is worried to just send a check and nothing be done with it. Dusty suggests they take a look at the pool see if they can get it fixed, otherwise look into a skate park or something else. James Edwards stated a problem with the park is that they keep the gates locked all the time. Damian says that he has taken the locks off and Art just puts his locks on. They won’t let anyone else in the park. Dusty feels it would be a good idea to get Michael Vickers involved finding out what’s going on. Update on the dog park, Elaine states that the chain link fences are installed and the gates are up. The signs, picnic table, water fountains and 3 pet fountains are on order. They will be putting grass up in the small dog area. Some irrigation is done but will be finishing up as well as planting trees. We will be having a grand opening in spring, however, no date has been set. We would like to have everything finished and looking green. Bob Edwards announced the next meeting will be on Feb 25, 2013 at 6 pm. James Edwards motioned to adjourn meeting and Mandy Owens seconded motion. Meeting adjourned at 5:55 pm.
