MINUTES OF THE PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION

Call to Order
Chair JaneAnn Oldrup called the April 15, 2019 meeting to order at 5:30 p.m.
The following were present:
Members: JaneAnn Oldrup, James Edwards, Barry Mathison, Maegan Sanders, Kim Elliott
and Becky Joyce. The following were absent: Hannah Robertson.
Staff present: Jim Burress, Parks & Recreation Director; Damian Cheatem, Recreation
Supervisor; and Gina Montague, Administrative Assistant Senior.
Public present: Councilor Juan Oropesa; Juan Fuentes, City Auditor; and Ryan Porter,
Engineering.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Member Mathison motioned to approve the agenda, member Sanders seconded, a voice
vote was unanimous, the motion passed with member Robertson being absent.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Member Mathison motioned to approve the minutes of the March 18, 2019 meeting,
member Joyce seconded. A voice vote was unanimous and the motion passed with
member Robertson being absent.
NON-ACTION ITEMS
1. Grantwriting – Jim Burress
Jim Burress addressed the Commission to ask for assistance with grant writing.
2. Fundraising – Jim Burress
Jim Burress asked the Commission to assist the department with Fundraising
and volunteering.
3. Parks & Recreation Directors Report – Jim Burress
Jim Burress gave a quick overview of what projects are in process in each of his
departments.
ACTION ITEMS
4. Discuss and consider recommendation to change the Commission meeting
frequency – Jim Burress
Jim Burress asked the Commission to consider if it is necessary to meet every
month, perhaps consider meeting every other month or once every quarter.
Member Sanders motioned for the Commission to continue to meet every month
or as needed, member Elliott seconded. A voice vote was unanimous and the
motion passed with member Robertson being absent.
OTHER BUSINESS
5. PUBLIC COMMENTS
Councilor Juan Oropesa asked to speak regarding the meeting frequency issue,
reminding the Commission that this is also a public meeting, an opportunity for
citizens to come forward to voice concerns.
Ryan Porter with the City of Roswell Engineering department, gave the
Commission information on the upcoming Bike-Pedestrian Master Plan and a
public meeting that will be held on May 2. This meeting is an opportunity for the
City to share more information about the project and gather thoughts and ideas
from the public.
Juan Fuentes, City Auditor addressed the Commission to let them know that he
and another City staff member will soon be attending grant writing training.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:05 p.m.

Call to Order
Chair JaneAnn Oldrup called the March 18, 2019 meeting to order at 5:30 p.m.
The following were present:
Members: JaneAnn Oldrup, James Edwards, Barry Mathison, Hannah Robertson and
Maegan Sanders. The following were absent: Kim Elliott and Becky Joyce.
Staff present: Marge Woods, Spring River Zoo Superintendent, Andrea Cole, Senior
Zookeeper and Gina Montague, Senior Administrative Assistant
Public present: Councilor Juan Oropesa, Allison Penn, Roswell Daily Record; Juan
Fuentes, Auditor; and Richard Madison.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Member Sanders motioned to approve the agenda with the recommendation to remove
Non-action item #1 as the presenter Jim Burress is out ill; member Robertson seconded, a
voice vote was unanimous, the motion passed with members Elliott and Joyce being
absent.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Member Mathison motioned to approve the minutes of the February 11, 2019 meeting,
member Edwards seconded. A voice vote was unanimous and the motion passed with
members Elliott and Joyce being absent.
NON-ACTION ITEMS
1. Parks and Recreation Directors Report – Jim Burress
This item was removed when the agenda was approved as Jim Burress was out
ill.
2. Spring River Park and Zoo Presentation – Marge Woods, Superintendent and
Andrea Cole, Senior Zookeeper
Marge Woods, Spring River Zoo Superintendent gave a detailed report on the
work being done at the Zoo to the exhibits and around the property. She also
spoke of the new Events and Programs now being offered, along with some
preliminary attendance numbers. She talked about some ideas for bringing in
more revenue to the Zoo. Andrea Cole, Senior Zookeeper spoke about the
fundraising events they had at the Zoo in the last year, as well as upcoming
events with Friends of the Zoo.

OTHER BUSINESS
4. PUBLIC COMMENTS
Richard Madison, Roswell citizen spoke to the Commission regarding his
concerns with the pool at the new Recreation Center.
