MINUTES OF THE PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION

A. CALL TO ORDER
Chair JaneAnn Oldrup called the July 15, 2019 meeting to order at 5:34 p.m.
B. ROLL CALL
The following were present:
Members: JaneAnn Oldrup, Barry Mathison, Kim Elliott, Hannah Robertson and Maegan
Sanders. The following were absent: James Edwards and Becky Joyce.
Staff present: Marcus Gallegos, Recreation Manager; Damian Cheatem, Recreation
Supervisor and Gina Montague, Administrative Assistant Senior.
C. APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Member Mathison motioned to approve the agenda, member Sanders seconded, a voice
vote was unanimous. Motion passed with members Edwards and Sanders being absent.
D. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
1. Member Elliott motioned to approve the minutes of the June 17, 2019 meeting,
member Mathison seconded. A voice vote was unanimous and the motion passed
with members Edwards and Joyce being absent.
E. NON-ACTION ITEMS
2. Report on the Roswell Recreation and Aquatics Center – Marcus Gallegos,
Recreation Manager and Damian Cheatem, Recreation Supervisor
Marcus Gallegos, Recreation Manager gave a report and answered questions
regarding the Recreation and Aquatics Center that opened on Saturday, June
29th. Damian Cheatem, Recreation Supervisor gave a brief report on the number
of memberships sold and revenues so far for the Recreation and Aquatics
Center. Cheatem also informed the Commission about plans to create a literal
“Hall of Fame” in the new recreation center. He will place jerseys and other
sports memorabilia in shadow boxes down the hallway. These items will come
from professional athletes who grew up in Roswell. He already has several being
shipped and more to come. This is to show the kids of Roswell that even though
they come from a small town, they can achieved great things as others have
done.
3. Report on the Pickleball players and Dancers
Commission Chair JaneAnn Oldrup gave a brief report on the Pickleball players,
stating that Marcus Gallegos met with them to address concerns they had in
regards to where they can play. He offered them several options, one being at
the Tennis Courts in Cahoon Park, the Roswell Adult Center or the Roswell
Recreation and Aquatics Center in the gym with cones and portable net.
Next, Oldrup went over what was discussed with the dancers from the Roswell
Adult and Recreation Center. They want to hold their classes at the Recreation
and Aquatic Center, so they were given a tour, tried out the flooring with their
dance shoes, etc. They are considering moving their classes here in January
using portable flooring for dancing. They are concerned about the acoustics in
the multi-purpose room where they would be dancing.

3. PUBLIC COMMENTS
JaneAnn Oldrup, Commission Chair asked citizen Bonnie Bitzer to speak about
her decision to run in the next City Council election.
Commissioner, Barry Mathison let the Commission know that he has a Little
League team competing in the Regional Championships in Houston, Texas next
week. If they win there, they will be flown to Livermore, CA to compete in the
Little League World Series.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:18 p.m.
