A. CALL TO ORDER At 5:36 p.m., Director Jim Burress determined the July 17 th meeting would not be held due to the lack of a quorum and requested a Roll Call for the record. B. ROLL CALL The following Members were present: Becky Robertson and Daniel L. Sanchez with Chair James Edwards, Vice Chair Maegan Sanders, Becky Joyce, Jeneva Dearing- Martinez, and Laurie Dudek being absent. Staff present: Jim Burress, Special Services Director and Sharene Brooks, Parks Administrative Assistant, Sr. Guests present: Vicki Burress, Daniel Cederberg, Megan Cederberg, and Chance Bonham. C. A. CALL TO ORDER Chair James Edwards called the May 20, 2024 meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. B. ROLL CALL The following Members were present: James Edwards, Maegan Sanders, Becky Robertson, Laurie Dudek, and Daniel Sanchez with Becky Joyce and Jeneva Dearing- Martinez being absent. Staff present: Jim Burress, Special Services Director and Sharene Brooks, Parks Administrative Assistant, Sr. Guests present: Rita Kane-Doerhoefer, Vicki Burress, John Gough, Carolyn Madison, Kate Davenport, Clyde Williamson, Kristin Waide, Alicia Cotton, Izzy Ocampo, Ale Arias, Deneisha Gonzales, Steve Gonzales, Donna Oracion, Tim Oracion, Manuel Payne, Matt Thomas, Kathleen Turner, and Carolyn Mitchell. C. APPROVAL OF THE AGENDA – Member Dudek motioned to approve the agenda. Member Sanchez seconded. A voice vote was unanimous and the motion passed 5-0, with Members Joyce and Dearing-Martinez being absent. D. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES 1. Member Dudek motioned to approve the minutes from the April 15, 2024 meeting. Member Sanchez seconded. A voice vote was unanimous and the motion passed 5-0, with Members Joyce and Dearing-Martinez being absent. G. OTHER BUSINESS 5. Public Comments. Guest Gough with Roswell Youth Soccer Association (RYSA), questioned the watering of the soccer fields at Cielo Grande and whether the City is doing their part on the maintenance side. Guest Davenport with RYSA, requested a maintenance schedule for the soccer fields. Guest Payne, President of Lobo Flag Football League, apologized for his frustrations and explained the issues happening with the flag football contract. Guest Kane-Doerhoefer introduced herself and listed her involvement with the community (trash bags/pollinators/grants/volunteering/writing curriculums). Guest T. Oracion with Roswell Pickleball Club (RPC), asked when the new pickleball courts would be opening and what the delay was. Guest Mitchell, 1 President of the Roswell Adult Center Foundation (RACF), advised there was an upcoming meeting regarding the sidewalk steps that are needed in order for the courts to open. Guest Turner with RPC, expressed her appreciation for what the RACF had done and asked about usage of volunteers at the Adult Center once the courts were opened. Guest Ocampo with Brady Plus, and Guest Cotton with Rubbermaid, addressed the commission regarding a Site Survey with Lovelace Regional Hospital. E. REGULAR ITEMS (ACTION ITEMS) 2. Consider Changing the Date of the Parks & Recreation Commission Meetings. Possible new meeting dates were discussed. Member Dudek motioned to change the date of the Parks & Recreation Commission meetings to the third Wednesday of every month. Member Sanders seconded. A voice vote was unanimous and the motion passed 5-0, with members Joyce and Dearing-Martinez being absent. Chair Edwards advised that with this new change, the next Parks & Recreation meeting would be June 19th at 5:30 p.m. F. NON-ACTION ITEMS 3. & 4. Report on Recreation/Parks Department. Director Burress provided information as to: • A ribbon cutting that was held at the All-Inclusive Playground • Both pools at the Rec Center opening Memorial Day weekend • Parks’ crew maintaining Main St.; a lot of flower pot damage • New artwork installed inside the Zoo train tunnel • Zoo pond has been stocked with fish; no fee for train rides or entrance into Zoo • New Golf Pro has been hired at Nancy Lopez Golf Course Also discussed were the “My Rec” app and the installation of dripline at the Boys & Girls Club. UNIT# MILEAGE ▪ Had a grass fire west of Block 73, behind 580 117,350 neighborhood 581 75,468 582 18,575 586 79,417 587 55,470 588 72,977 606 84,171 Submitted by: Ruben Esquivel, Cemetery Superintendent Approved by: Jim Burress, Special Services Director Page 1 of 1 ZOO – June, 2024 Animal Care/Maintenance: ▪ Passed the USDA Inspection and are relicensed for 3 more years! ▪ The mini horse and donkey had their teeth floated. o This is an annual procedure which involves filing down teeth to remove sharp edges so they can chew properly. ▪ The bears were given access to the old mountain lion exhibit -- doubling their space (pictured below are “Ursula” and “Sierra”). o The Parks Dept. finished covering the exhibit. o The animal care staff fixed-up the enclosure with enrichment items and live plants to increase their quality of life. ▪ The coatimundi exhibit was filled with dirt, plants, and other enrichment so they can engage in their natural behavior of foraging (pictured next page are “Laverne” and “Shirley”). ▪ A temporary fix (until a new enclosure is built) to the eagle exhibit was a patch-up to cover rusted out sections. ▪ Landscaping and planting was done throughout the gardens and animal exhibits. ▪ “Busy” the beaver got his teeth trimmed. Page 1 of 2 ▪ Two senior reptiles were lost; a bearded dragon and a corn snake (pictured below is Lead Zookeeper, Ayrin, with bearded dragon “Elliot”). o Both received wonderful care by our veterinarians. o They were taken out regularly for Keeper Chats and were loved by all! o They will be greatly missed. They were seniors throughout Southern NM and West TX. The course conditions exceeded expectations and players couldn’t be happier! • Taco Tuesday has continued to get bigger and bigger; we proudly host 100+ golfers every week! • Spring River proudly hosted 40 boys and girls from all over the state ranging from the age of 7-18. Parents raved about the golf course conditions and staff! • The ARM Foundation and Roswell Martians chose Spring River to host their fundraiser events. The Golf team knocked it out of the park; both tournaments raised a lot of money and made the city of Roswell happy! • The AG Association visited us and we received some amazing feedback. They do not golf a lot, but they know grass and couldn’t help but notice how healthy it was on the property. Great to see AG teachers across the State let loose and have some fun!! Roswell Aquatic Center • Lifeguards continue to conduct their monthly in-service under the direction of the Aquatic Supervisor. This month, the LGI’s have decided to conduct an in-service for the guards on handling disgruntled patrons effectively and professionally. Each guard maintains their weekly requirement of swimming 300 yards and continues to perform "surprise" rescues. • Private LTS classes are doing well and aerobics classes have more than 20 participants regularly for both morning and evening sessions. The summer after-school program brings approximately 80 kids on Thursdays from 9 am to 11 am. • This month, we had eight incident reports, which were minor first-aid cases. Only two rescues were reported. • Six birthday parties with swim passes were held. Roswell Adult Center • Memberships sold: 10 • The Adult Center hosted its second dance of the Summer Dance Series and the attendance doubled the first dance. • Updates to the group fitness room included a new sound system, industrial fans, enhanced lighting, and an improved organization style.
